A/N: I'd like to thank Corri for being my beta on this one and PercyGal for suggesting the title.

She would never understand. She could never understand, and he couldn't explain. It was all too complicated. He loved her with all his heart but if he would tell her or anyone else, she might get kidnapped, raped, or even murdered because of who he was.

She was a Loyalist and had been married for three years. Her husband had been killed during the first month of the war.

He watched her while she slept. She was so beautiful in all her simplicity. Her beautiful green eyes sparkled whenever she looked at him, her long black hair was breathtaking. He ran his fingers through her hair, and she smiled in her sleep.

He had seen her in one of the British camps. Since the death of her husband she had volunteered to take care of the wounded soldiers. She was a wealthy and highly respected woman but she couldn't stand doing nothing.

He had never told her who he really was. She knew his name and she knew what he did but he never told her about his brutal tactics on the battlefield. He didn't want to lose her.

He simply knew she loved him. She had said it countless times but even if she hadn't, he still knew. The way she treated him, the look in her eyes when he entered the room, her gentle touches was all that he needed.

But he just couldn't stay. If anyone would find out about their affair, she might end up dead. He'd rather break her heart himself then watch her die.

He placed a soft kiss on her lips and slid out of bed. He quietly dressed and sat down at the writing desk. He took a quill and parchment and wrote her a goodbye note.

My beloved,

This might come as a surprise but I have to leave you. We are moving on. You've got to move on.

I've enjoyed our time together but I can't stay. I hope you can forgive me for this and understand.

Forever yours,

William

He sealed the letter with wax and left it on the desk for her. He slowly walked to the door and stopped. With one last glance over his shoulder at the sleeping beauty in the bed, he left.

Her heart shattered in a million pieces when she read the letter but she intended to go on as he had said. Later that day, she received the paper with the list of soldiers killed in action.

She fell on her knees crying when she saw his name. Colonel William Tavington, fallen on the field at Cowpens. She gathered all her courage and went to the camp. His body was displayed on a table in a tent. His hair was neatly tied back in his queue and they had changed his uniform. She put the flowers she had brought on his chest and placed one last kiss on his soft lips before she left.

The end.
