Duffy's Hope
There are some parts of me that hope Annie's parents really are alive, and that they're coming back to get her, just like her note says. I guess I want to believe that Annie's parents are alive because I want to believe that we won't be living the "Hard-Knock Life" forever. But then, my dream is crushed. I look at the facts and know that in reality, Annie's parents must be dead. Otherwise, they would have come and claimed her already.
Miss Hannigan says that Annie's parents left her with that note in 1922. Now its 1933. Eleven years have passed. If Annie's parents are alive, why haven't they come and gotten her in the past eleven years?
I think that all of us are kinda jealous of Annie. Because she has the note and the locket. At least she has in her words "proof". She has something from her parents. Something she can remember them by. Some of us, if we are lucky, have memories of our parents. Like Pepper. But not me. I don't remember anything about my parents. My earliest memories are of living here.
Annie's note and locket are hope. Not just for her, but for all of us. Even those like me. Who won't admit it.
