Cal felt a huge weight lift from his shoulders.. He let out a sigh of relief the moment he discovered he and Ethan were brothers. He was thankful that not his whole life had been a lie. While his mum wasn't his real mum at least Ethan was still his brother. At least he still had someone to call his family. Even though with Charlie's help, Cal had found his birth mum, she wasn't his family. Well, he couldn't call her his family. To him, Ethan would always be his family. He and Matilda, that is. Just the thought of the girl, whom he'd grown to love as a his daughter brought tears to his eyes.
The pain when he saw the paternity results was still too real. And instead of facing the truth, accepting the DNA results, Cal did what he normally did when life got tough for him. He ran. Thankfully, when he saw just how much the news affected his brother, Cal realised he wasn't alone. Ethan was as upset as he was and together they would get through the pain.
Christmas had arrived. It would be the first Christmas without their 'mum', without little Matilda. Ethan was finishing off the Christmas tree decorations while Cal was sat on the sofa, his mind off on its own.
"There. Finally finished." Ethan announced stepping back.
When he didn't get an answer from his brother immediately from his brother Ethan turned around. He could sense his brother was not himself.
"Hey." he said cautiously approaching him.
Cal came out of his gaze and smiled weakly.
"Hey." he replied budging across the sofa so Ethan could sit down.
"You okay?" Ethan asked taking a seat.
Cal nodded slowly.
"Matilda?" Ethan said knowing Cal was pretending to be alright.
Cal couldn't pretend any longer. Finally, he broke down. At first, Ethan was unsure of what to do, then seeing Cal so broken by the loss of Matilda, or 'Toad' as they so fondly called her, Ethan embraced him. Cal gripped onto his brother as he sobbed.
"I miss her too." Ethan told him feeling some of his own tears fall.
"I know. She would have loved her Christmas with us." Cal replied.
"Yeah, she would have."
Ethan handed Cal a glass and raised his own.
"To Matilda. Merry Christmas."
Cal followed and raised his glass.
"Merry Christmas, little Toad."
