This is the revised version, thanks to my beta: Ria D'Arcy. She's the best and she's working hard! We will be continuing to update the chapters. I hope you enjoy it!
Original A/N: This has nothing to do with my other stories of Yugioh, although the girl in this story has the same name as "Breaking Walls". I can't help it, I love the name. I have a general idea where I want to go with this story, so let me know if you want me to continue. Or if it has potential. Positive critics are welcome. Improvement is always better than looking like a fool who can't write. : P This story takes place during Battle City Finals, right after the first duel (Yami/Yugi & Bakura). I will be changing a few things if this story goes on, so I hope you don't mind. : )
Battle City
Yugi Moto bade good night to his friends before retiring to his own room for the night. Sleeping on the blimp was actually quite relaxing; the fact that you were hundreds of miles up in the air was scarcely on your mind unless you looked out a window. Which Yugi refused to do.
Turning the doorknob of his assigned room, he heard a thud and abruptly stopped in alarm. Who was inside? He had seen all of his friends leave for their own rooms, and if the person inside was unknown that would not turn out well.
Plucking up the courage he usually kept reserved for duels, or high panic situations, Yugi slowly opened the door and peered around the inch thick wood to see into the dark room. He squinted his eyes in a vain attempt to see more.
Another thud sounded, causing the small boy to jump, startled and quickly flick the light switch into its on position. The light came to life to reveal a small blond struggling to climb through his window.
Yugi gasped as recognition immediately hit.
"Kari!" Yugi ran to her in a panic. "What are you doing?"
Flashing the boy a wide grin, causing him to blush, she replied with a happy,
"Coming to see you of course!" She seemed oblivious to the fact that she was half hanging out of a blimp, which was suspended in the middle of the atmosphere. If Yugi was to say anyone was brave, it was definitely Kari. And he would have taken more time to admire that about her if it wasn't for the fact that she seemed to be stuck on something, preventing her from coming fully into his room.
"Couldn't you have used the door?" Yugi asked, with a high voice and wide eyes.
"Seto doesn't need to know I am talking to you." Kari grunted as she wiggled her foot free, as Yugi frowned in confusion. What did Seto Kaiba have to do with anything?
He was about to ask when Kari suddenly became unstuck. Instead of climbing gracefully into the room, like any proper person would do, Kari fell ungracefully against Yugi and forced him against the wall as her lack of balance knocked his off.
Crystal blue eyes met amethyst ones and Yugi couldn't have been blushing harder by this point. He had never had a girl's body up against his like this before, and he could feel every curve of her lithe body. He felt her rapid breaths against his cheek, the scent of cooling mint filled his nostrils and his body leaned forward unconsciously.
Kari's eyes dropped down to his lips before her own curved upwards.
Unnoticed went the fact that Yugi's millennium puzzle was stabbing the duo uncomfortably in their abdomens.
As Yugi realized where Kari was staring, he squirmed with nerves.
"Uh, K-kari?" He stuttered and all thought process was taken from him as her eyes snapped back up to stare into his own.
A strawberry blush coated her own cheeks when she noticed she was making him uncomfortable, she backed away with a sheepish smile.
"Sorry," she muttered before spinning away to plop herself upon his bed. Yugi watched her with curious eyes.
"I still don't know why you are here." Yugi said once he had found his voice, although it was a bit scratchy.
Kari sat in the middle of Yugi's bed, pulling her legs beneath her so she was sitting cross legged. Her hands smoothed out the creases of the top sheet while she grinned.
"I told you! I wanted to see you. We have to be competitors out there," she waved vaguely towards the door, "and I'd rather have some down time, ya know?"
Yugi nodded with understanding as he walked over to her, propping himself awkwardly on the edge of the mattress in front of her. He was still pretty shaken from the close proximity they had shared just a few moments earlier. Suddenly though, what she had said before came back to him and sparked his curiosity.
"Um Kari? You said you didn't want Kaiba to know we were talking… What did you mean by that?" He asked shyly, avoiding eye contact in favour of staring at his feet.
Kari looked away in annoyance, a hiss escaping her throat as she did so. Yugi looked up but realized her reaction had not been directed toward him. If he guessed right, the hiss had been directed at Kaiba. Eventually Kari sighed,
"He's… possessive."
Yugi frowned in confusion. Sure Yugi knew how Kaiba was with his company, his cards, and his younger brother Mokuba… but what did any of that have to do with Kari? When everyone was together, Kaiba did not seem to acknowledge Kari's existence whatsoever.
Kari's eyes lit up as she realized Yugi had no idea what she was talking about. Apparently her and Seto had played their parts far better than she had thought. So to clue Yugi in, she hesitantly told him the truth.
"Seto is… he's my… boyfriend."
If Yugi had been expecting an explanation, it sure hadn't been that one. His eyes widened farther than they had in quite some time and a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach rendered him temporarily speechless. Kari watched his reaction as her lip tilted upwards ever so slightly.
"We had to keep it a secret for publicity sake. If I won the tournament, then it could have looked like Kaiba had let me. Not that I will."
Now Yugi understood, but that didn't mean he liked it, especially the way she degraded herself.
"You could win." Yugi tried to coax his friend into having faith in herself.
Kari smiled brightly, making Yugi's heart flutter involuntarily. Kari was pretty to begin with, but put a smile on her face and she became ten times more attractive. Is that what Kaiba saw in her?
"I appreciate the sentiment Yugi. You're always so optimistic, and ready to make people feel better about themselves. I love that about you." Yugi blushed, causing Kari to laugh good naturedly, "But actually, it's very true that I won't win. There is more than just a tournament going on here and I know that you know that. Seto doesn't want to hear about any of it and, well, he has his own thoughts about the whole thing." Kari stopped herself. She was thinking about something specific, but didn't voice her thoughts.
The knowing feeling Yugi had felt creeping up from his stomach since the moment he stepped onto the blimp returned in full force at Kari's statement. She was right. There was much more going on than just a contest to see who the better duelist was. Throw in the fact that Marik was on the blimp and in the contest made things incredibly, well, not good.
Yugi relented with a nod of his head, though he now wondered how Kari knew about all of this.
"Have you… um, had any encounters with the Rare Hunters?" He asked. Unfortunately Kari answered with a, little too eager, nod.
"They wanted my Kaiser Sea Horse. I was able to outsmart them by a hair though." Kari grinned happily before losing it in favor of a frown. "I'm guessing they were trying to take your rare card as well?"
Yugi's face went red as he remembered his cards weren't the only thing that they were trying to steal. Absently, his hand clutched at the chain around his neck that his puzzle hung from.
"Yeah," Yugi replied in all seriousness, "we all need to be very careful in this tournament. I've discovered that Marik is the leader of that rare hunter group."
As Yugi watched Kari, whose face didn't reflect the shock he had been expecting, all he saw was her frown deepening into what could only be called a scowl.
"I knew it," she murmured, "That slug. He's way too perfect not to be. Always going around, acting as if he is totally innocent. No one who looks like him can be innocent." She paused, before speaking in a voice that held an unspoken duh note, "You also have to take into consideration that he has the remaining god cards."
Slapping her hands across her mouth and her eyes widening in terror, told Yugi she had been thinking allowed. Horrified that she had let that slip, Kari began to think of how mad Seto would be when he found out she had told Yugi.
"I already knew Kari." He said with a sympathetic smile which helped to visibly relax the girl, though it was only now her face that reflected shock.
"How?"
"I've dueled against him before, granted he was using another one of his mind slaves."
"And… you won?" The girl asked in surprise.
"Yes." Yugi nodded, looking a little proud since it seemed to be an impressive feat in the girl's eyes. He straightened up a little.
"Wow!" She exclaimed, bouncing up and down on the bed a little. "That's awesome! That means you have a god card, right?!"
A smile, as big as Kari's, came to Yugi's face as he nodded again. For the first time, he let the excitement of that fact show. He had obtained a god card! Yugi had only been thinking about the burden a god card carried, or thinking of Marik and his role in this puzzle. Now, something about Kari was making him think from a different perspective.
Suddenly the good mood was ruined as the door of his bedroom was slammed open. Kari stiffened with a look of horror on her face and Yugi turned with the expectation of seeing Marik. Instead, all he saw was Seto Kaiba with a look that bespoke of murderous rage. Maybe it would have been safer if it had been Marik standing there.
Yugi flew up into a defensive stance, instinctively shielding his friend, but Kari beat him to it and was already half way across the room. She stopped in between the two boys and looked at Kaiba with a look pleading for peace.
"What are you doing in here Kari?" Seto questioned in a low, dangerous voice. His cobalt eyes stared directly over her head and into Yugi's violet ones. If looks could kill…
Kari kept herself in check as she responded,
"I was just hanging out with Yugi before bed," which apparently wasn't the appropriate way to explain things as Seto practically growled in rage before attempting to take a step forward. Kari beat him to it though and closed the space between their two bodies.
Kari knew that if Seto decided to react offensively to Yugi, she would never be able to stop him. But Kari also knew how Seto could be. It was one of the reasons she had been attracted to him; she felt safe with him. And safe had been something she'd never felt before meeting him. He was protective. But Kari didn't need protection from Yugi; she just desperately wanted to be friends with the little spikey haired boy.
"We were just chatting Kaiba, why are you getting so angry?" Yugi asked, his eyes narrowing. He wasn't fond of the way Seto was acting about Kari. It didn't make their relationship appear all too good.
"Why am I getting so angry?" Seto repeated, his eyes too narrowed into slits before his dark brown bangs. Kari fought down her urge to brush the strands away so she could see his face, even if it was distorted by misplaced rage. She loved seeing his face. "Should you really be fraternizing with your competitor Muto? I let it slide with your dweeb squad, but when you begin to branch out to others I have to make a stand. This is a competition, not a friendly get together."
Yugi realized Seto was trying to keep the fact that he and Kari were together a secret, since he was unaware that Kari had already told him. However, not knowing the full extent of their relationship, Yugi didn't want anything to happen to Kari because of him. So he decided to play along and act ignorant.
"You're right." He said and let his face retain its normal, apologetic features. Seto quirked an eyebrow in his shock, he had been expecting more of a fight from the smaller boy. Kari too was stunned as she whirled around to look at Yugi in disbelief.
Yugi didn't look at Kari, not wanting to set off Seto again. He kept his gaze locked directly with Seto's as he continued to speak.
"We are competitors, and we will leave it at that. Kari, you should probably go to your own room now. I'll see you tomorrow at the next duel."
Yugi felt the regret bubble up inside him as he felt Kari's saddened gaze burn directly into him. He didn't risk looking at her though, and was relieved when Seto began to back out of the room. Yugi sincerely hoped this hadn't ruined their budding friendship. He really liked Kari, she was bright and energetic. And from what he had seen from her dueling style, she was smart as well.
Maybe if he wasn't so shy, and if she wasn't already dating Kaiba, he would probably try to get closer to her. But both of those things held him back. So he turned away from the girl to signal the conversation was over.
Kari watched, slightly hurt, before leaving the room with Seto. She closed the door behind her with a final note of defeat and stood in the silent hallway with Seto.
The two of them stood in the hallway until Kari rounded on the taller man with a glare.
"I appreciate your concern for me, but I was just being friends with Yugi. I like him," she hissed, but didn't object as he took her hand in his gently. Although his demeanor was quiet, Seto didn't look pleased at all.
"Like him? Yugi's an egotistical brat. Not to mention you're supposed to be on my side." Seto bit out as he tugged Kari down the hall, jealousy was deep within his soul.
Kari refused the urge to roll her eyes, even though her boyfriend wouldn't be able to see it.
"I am on your side Seto. Always." Kari tried to reassure him softly, and was pleased when she saw his hardened expression began to soften. "But I still want to be friends with others, Yugi included."
Seto stopped abruptly, causing Kari to run into his side. Luckily he had the good reflexes to catch her around the waist to prevent her from falling.
"Why do you so badly want to be friends with Yugi? Before now you could have cared less." Seto demanded, looking into her eyes to see if he could find the answer there. Kari swallowed nervously, and Seto saw it in her eyes, before she relented.
"Because he's nice and understands things others don't." She hinted. She didn't want to tell Seto that the reason why she felt so comfortable with the small boy was because Yugi saw outside of the box. Seto didn't. Even if it was staring him in the face, plain as day, he would deny it ever happening out of pure stubbornness. That was something Kari didn't like.
Unfortunately, Seto wasn't stupid or ignorant.
"And I'm not any of those things, so you go looking for it in someone else?" The hurt was written in his eyes, although he was desperately trying to keep it from showing. Kari still saw it clearly and the amount of guilt she felt was immense.
"Don't say it like that," Kari said with a frown as she ran her hands up his arms. He wasn't wearing his long jacket for once, leaving him in his black turtle neck and black pants. "You make it sound like I'm trying to cheat on you. And that's something I would never do." The last part Kari sincerely swore, she had always been devoted to this man.
He was everything to her.
Seto pressed Kari's back against the wall, causing her heart to race. He leaned down to rest his forehead against hers, this way he could look into her eyes.
"How do I know it's the truth? You two were in his bed –"
"On his bed," Kari interrupted vehemently, "And there was space between us. We had just been talking about the tournament."
Seto was silent for a moment. When Kari looked into his eyes she saw the conflicted emotions swirling about. She allowed her hands to run up to his shoulders, her fingers playing with the ends of his hair that lay against his neck. Seto closed his eyes to the touch, and Kari smiled.
"You didn't tell him anything did you?" Seto muttered, his eyes staying closed until she spoke, and Kari knew exactly what he was attempting to hint at.
"Of course not," Kari spoke before she realized she remembered something. "Um, well, not about the tournament. But, uh… Seto? I did tell him about us." She never wanted to keep things from him. She expected him to be honest with her, so she took it upon herself to do the same.
His eyes snapped wide open, no longer half hooded or soft. His entire demeanor hardened as he leaned away from her.
"You what?" He hissed through a clenched jaw. "You knew –"
"Yes, I know." Kari cut him off again, knowing the rant he was about to start. "Yugi won't say anything. I know he won't."
Seto was fuming on the inside. That runt knew something Seto hadn't wanted anyone to know. He could hold the info over Seto's head in some sort of blackmail attempt, and Seto did not appreciate that feeling whatsoever.
However, the jealousy he had once been feeling slowly simmered away as a wicked smirk tilted up his lips. Kari tilted her head in a curious gesture. Seto pressed up against her once more, leaving the poor girl breathless.
"Well, at least one thing is for certain. Although I don't like Muto knowing something so personal about me, he knows I have something he doesn't." Seto murmured just before he began to trail hot kisses down her jawline and towards her neck. She tasted of sweat and cold wind, most likely from climbing along the outside of the blimp as she could get into Yugi's room.
As if someone climbing on the side of his blimp would go unnoticed. His silly little girl.
Kari's eyes fluttered close while her body gained in heat from his soft.
"And what is it that Yugi doesn't have?" Kari managed to ask once Seto paused in his ministrations. She gasped as Seto pressed his hips against hers to make a point. Literally.
"You." He said against the soft skin of her throat, his hands winding along the width of her hips. His want was pressing firmly between her legs. "And soon… the god cards as well."
