Yay! New fic from me. How I've missed my fandom. Just a little some thing to get me back into the JoA groove.
Disclaimer: I own nothing Joan of Arcadia related.
A/N: This is a mix of show canon and myStarting Over-verse. So, yeah. I hope you all like it.
1. Ever since Kevin's accident, the one thing Luke missed most was his relationship with Joan. They'd been friends, real friends despite his nerdiness and her oddness. It had made him feel like he belonged to the family.
2. As much as Luke loves science (and he does love science), he loves the history of science more. The changes society has gone through in relation to the advances of science and technology both fascinate and humble him. He thinks it's good to have such a perspective.
3. The first girl who'd ever captured his attention was Susan Jamison in his seventh grade English class. She and the teacher Mr. Isaacs clashed over the overt patriarchal arrogance of each book. When he thinks back on this, he realizes he should have known he'd develop an interest in Grace.
4. As much as he wishes he were closer to his family, he usually relishes his anonymity. Besides, most of the time they're there when it counts. Most of the time.
5. It was all he could do not to cry when Joan was admitted to the hospital at the end of his freshman year. He'd been afraid they'd never get a chance to re-cultivate their friendship.
6. Aside from the one time he blew up at Kevin, he never told anyone he was glad Kevin was paralyzed. Not even Grace.
7. He'd also never told anyone that he's still glad that Kevin was paralyzed because they became brothers instead of two people bound by shared DNA. Not even Kevin.
8. Even though he and Grace started dating at the end of his freshman year, they didn't go on a real date until a week before prom. He'd snuck out of the house and borrowed the car in the middle of the night, woke Grace up by throwing pebbles at her window and took her to an all-night diner for pancakes. When she asked why he did it, he said he thought she'd appreciate the spontaneous daringness of it.
9. He was right.
10. Luke never really knew why he was friends with Friedman, but he's glad they are.
11. For the first fifteen years of his life, he hadn't had a favorite color. By the end of his freshman year, a very pale shade of blue claimed that title.
12. No other color ever took its place.
13. Luke really did look up to his dad.
14. For most of high school and college, he considered being a forensics specialist.
15. Luke knows better than to tell Grace he's glad she decided to explore Judaism more, partly because he knows she'll get defensive about it, but mostly because he doesn't want to explain how much he enjoys seeing her and her dad mend their relationship.
16. He hated MIT. He found the professors pretentious, all the students had a twisted sense of humor (not to mention an obsession with internet porn that put Friedman to shame) and the weather was too damn cold.
17. He was more than happy to do his graduate work at Stanford.
18. Where he took up competitive swimming.
19. Despite his passion for theoretical physics, Luke doesn't regret going into medical research. Especially when he discovered a drug to stimulate partial nerve regeneration.
20. He counts resolving his own issues and forgiving his parents for focusing on Kevin and Joan, watching Kevin dance (after a fashion), and convincing Grace to marry him as his three greatest achievements. And he's perfectly content.
