Lisa awoke with a start, the echoes of her dreams still dancing in her mind, the low rumble of thunder murmured through the quiet house. The house was deathly still. The only sound Lisa could hear was her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.

The hairs on her neck tingled when suddenly the biggest clap of thunder she had ever heard slammed down, shaking the tiny house. Lisa was fully awake now, shaking in fear. She slipped out of her warm bed, a mattress stuffed with hay, a thin cotton
blanket,

and no pillow at all. She ran to her closet, pulling out her green tunic and black cape, the one her grandmother had made for her that was the color of the setting sun over the mine. She clasped it around her neck and put up the hood. Lisa hurried
down

the attic steps and into the small kitchen. No one was there, of course, her father had gone to work in the mines.

Lisa hurriedly started to make his lunch before she even thought about her own hunger and need for breakfast. She loved her father, for he was all she had in this cruel world. Her father had taken care of her since she was but a baby, and his familiar,
/a ginger cat named Roland helped him as well. A familiar was an animal companion that everyone had by the age of twelve. Lisa had not found her familiar, but she was only 11, so she had to wait a whole year before she could get one.

Lisa grabbed her leather satchel from the wall, putting the lunch of a piece of sausage and cheese in it. The girl exited the house, breathing in the wet air. Her father wouldn't want her out in this weather, but she didn't want him to get

too hungry, always forgetting. Lisa started to run, letting the rain soak her blonde locks and roll down her rosy cheeks. The girl ran to the mine, a cave that was close by.

The girl peered in the dark cave and saw a mine cart. Her father was almost always there to meet her every morning, but perhaps it was the rain. She got in the mine cart and it immediately started to roll down. She laughed in joy, she had never

taken the mine cart, but it was so fast and wonderful.

When it finally stopped, the girl got out, brushing black soot from her nails. She looked at the dimly lit cave, searching for her father. "Papa?" She called. Her voice echoed in the cavern and she tried again. "Papa!" There

was no response… She had always imagined the place filled with musclyminers and proud familiars that helped them and stayed by their side, but Lisa found none. The girl felt fear creep in and called once more, "Papa! Stop fooling around, it's
/me, Lisa!"

Suddenly, a dark voice responded in a low chuckle, "Lisa… What a pretty name…" It wasn't her father's voice.

Lisa felt her heart leap, looking wildly around in the dark room and whispered, "W-who's there?"

She heard another laugh and then the voice said, "Why don't you come see? I must meet this Lisa your papa has told so much about…"
