Since reading Son I just HAD to write about Kira and Jonas's relationship before the book. They were one of my first pairings, so I hope you guys like it! Please review.
Jonas thought Kira was beautiful the moment he saw her, and he felt guilty for it. Matty had been a sweet boy, if rambunctious, and he would be greatly missed. He wasn't used to noticing women, he'd spent years working to be Leader and he never really allowed himself to. Besides, he had absolutely no idea how to talk to women and treated them the same way he treated men.
He was still staring at her when his young assistant showed up. Rowan had long, curly red hair and extremely pale skin that turned bright red if she spent too much time outdoors. At the moment her round cheeks were slightly ruddy, though that may have been tears. "We're going to have to make some funeral plans for Matty," she paused and took a deep breath. "Kira should be staying with her father for the time being so we probably won't have to worry about finding him a helper for a few months. Apparently she's also a seamstress, so despite her lame leg she should be very helpful. I already have a work party set up to take down the wall, they should have it down within a couple days."
"Thank you Rowan," he murmured, slightly distracted. "How would I ever get on without you?"
"Well, if you quit staring at pretty girls you might be a bit more productive," she smiled and bounded off with her messenger bag banging against her legs. Jonas blinked and shook his head furiously, then he went to talk to the gravediggers.
Kira glanced over her shoulder just as Leader turned to walk away. She knew him only as the blue-eyed man Matty had told her she could marry, but so far he seemed withdrawn. He was handsome though, tall and broad-shouldered with dark hair.
Her father had a light grip on her arm while he walked her to his homestead. He was surprisingly sure-footed despite his blindness. A small crowd of people came by to congratulate her on coming or give their condolences for Matty's death. Finally they came to the small building and the last well-wishers wandered back to their own homes.
"I have an extra room for you to stay in, it has a bed and a table. Rowan brings dinner around every night but I can buy some ingredients from the market if you'd prefer to cook."
"Thank you, but I'm not a very skilled cook by any means. I can sew you some new clothes though, yours seem to be a bit ragged," she fingered the frayed edges of his sleeve. "But I'll need some new supplies, I could only bring so much with me."
"Of course. But tell me what's happened since the last time we've talked."
