Always Second Best

Always Second Best

She is first and I am second
I would rather be the base
I know too much of the feeling
When you almost win the race,
But everybody knows
That almost doesn't count.
No one sees the next-in-line,
They'll hear no special sound.
It's not enough to be there
Where they show off the top three
First place goes to Granger
Who deserves no more than me.
Second-placers never
Get our stories told-
There's a limit to the champions
A single school can hold.
I refuse to come in second
I would rather lose outright
It's simply so much worse
When you nearly win the fight-
When you did all that you can
And you still can't beat the rest…
Nothing's worse than almost
I am always second best.
