I wake up in the morning, as I always do, and realize that something is off. I walk through my house, or what is more like a hut, in confusion. Where has my family gone? The most dreadful day of the year is upon us. The day the Capitol chooses 24 innocent children, that must fight to the death... I suppose that if I am ever reaped, I have a fairly good chance, I mean, being from district 7 and all, I know how to swing an axe fairly well.

I don't feel much like eating, not that we ever have much... My family isn't what anyone would call, a wealthy family. Infact, we are the poorest of them all in the district, but that doesn't stop me from doing the best that I can and building up muscle. I have a younger brother and sister, both of whom are eligible for the reaping this year. After thinking as to what I could do for the morning, I look at the time. 10:30 already? Better get ready. The reaping was in exactly half an hour. I put on my classic blue flannel with a pair of dressy jeans, and head to the town square.

I check in, and get my finger pricked, which never feels good, but I've gotten used to it. I look over the crowd and lay my eyes on my brother and sister, both of whom are in their respective sections of their gender. I head on into the 17 year old male section. It happens to be a quarter quell this year, the 100th anniversary. They decided to keep it secret until the reapings themselves. Our perky escort walk onto the stage.

"Welcome, Welcome, I am here to choose one lucky male and female to be part of this year Hunger Games. But first, the more important thing. The announcement of the quarter quell. As you all know, every 25 years there is to be a special twist put into the games. I will let President Snow announce what it is." He gestures to the giant screen in the center of the stage. "Hello citizens of Panem. This years games, as you all know, is the 100th anniversary since we started these games. This year," he opens the slip of paper from inside the box, "in order to show that even those around can betray you, the person selected out of the bowls are not the ones who are going to be entering the games, but instead they are choosing who goes in." The screen turns black and all of the district is in awe.

"Well, that a bit of a shocker! How about we spice it up a bit and choose the boys first!" He walks over to the bowl and takes a slip of paper in his hand. "Levin Menhant". Our escort ushers the young boy up, who seems to be 15. "Okay, pick someone from the male section to be the male tribute!" I hate Levin, he has always bullied my brother, and he has tried to kill him before. Never a good thing. "Hmm, let me see" he says in a demonic voice. "I choose... Leon Arausio" And he points directly at my brother. My innocent 12 year old brother. Without reacting I scream "Wait! I volunteer as tribute!" There was nothing that prohibited me from doing that, right? Well, nevertheless, our escort allows it. "And what is your name young man?" I speak with boldness and determination in my voice. "Brannock Arausio."

He nods, and walks over to the ladies bowl. "Iberis Battenburg." All I can think is that this is my ex-girlfriend who absolutely hates me, and my family. Without even thinking, she blurts out the name of a 12 year old girl.

A name I recognize

A name that I picked out

The name of my sister

"Inala Arausio"
