Windows

A short story describing Naruto's feelings as a young child.

…………………………

Mothers and Fathers spend time with their children after a hard days work, cuddled up in a nice warm house. But never once, did they look out their window. Never once, did they see the sad face that begs to join them.

The night is cold, but they don't notice, all happy and secure in each others company. As if it were never there, the face in the window vanishes, leaving a small misted spot that slowly begins to disappear.

His face is turned downwards, staring blankly at the gray stones that rest upon the ground. Slowly, he trudges towards the apartment building in which he lives. It's not something for him to look forward to; no one will be there to greet him. Tremors run through his skin as the wind becomes colder.

A drunk staggers by Naruto, spitting at him with disgust as he passes. Wiping the spit away, Naruto keeps walking, as if nothing had ever happened. No one has ever been kind to him, no shred of comfort ever offered. Why do they despise him? He stopped asking this question long ago.

One time, he had tried to make a friend. Naruto and the boy seemed to get on well enough, until one day; his parents came to hurry him away. Naruto had never seen the boy since then. As time passed, he realized that he probably never will.

A light dims in another window, and Naruto wanders over out of curiosity. Wrapping his coat tighter around him, Naruto carefully peaks inside.

A Mother and a Father bend over a small girls face and kiss her on the forehead, saying goodnight. She smiles and hugs them tight, wearily closing her eyes as sleep finally takes its hold on her. The Father gently picks her up and tucks her into bed, wishing her good dreams.

Naruto still stands there, a longing look in his eyes. His heart beats painfully in his chest, and his hand rises to clutch at it, trying to subdue its rapid beating. Instead, all it does is make him feel worse.

Seeing all these families, seeing how much they love and care for each other, all seem foreign to him. That feeling of belonging and having others who will always be there for you, through good and bad, have all been taken away from him. His life has been nothing but a torrent of misery and a scapegoat for others problems. Somebody's caught a cold; it's his fault that it happened. A child breaks an arm, it's his fault the child was being careless.

He pulls away from the window, and begins to run away. Run to escape that feeling of worthlessness, that ache of being someone that nobody cares about. Hot tears stream down his face, but he keeps running.

Slamming the door of his apartment shut, Naruto crawls under a blanket, grabbing a corner to wipe away his tears. Slowly but surely, his sobbing is subdued, leaving him feeling all the worse. Now, more aches bombard him, a gaping hole bleeding somewhere in his heart. Those sights he had seen today, made him feel more alone than ever before.

"Why do I have to be the one looking through the window?"

Meh… Just a drabble I felt like writing. I've always felt so sorry for Naruto, today, I just felt like putting it to words. So tell me, what did you think of it? Please check out my other stories, if it's not too much to ask. Till then!
