Hermione Granger and the Marriage Law of 1995

Ch.1

The great hall buzzed with excitement of the new term and the special feast happening that very evening. Hermione Granger sat with her two best friends, one with red hair whom was stuffing his face across from her and another with green eyes next to her. Her attention went from her pumpkin juice to the booming voice of the headmaster of Hogwarts.

"Students, as you know this feast is different from our beginning of the term dinner. The fall of Tom Riddle marked many with their death, but also brought many back."

Hermione peered over to the new table next to the Gryffindor Table; it was designated for the Student's Parents. Both Muggle and Magical Parents sat at the table, most had arrived that morning but a pair sat there engrossed in their once headmasters voice. Lily and James potter smiled at Dumbledore. As soon as Harry and Cedric grabbed the cup and disappeared a gold glow was sucked into the portkey.

Harry explained the story from his bed in the infirmary. Lily and James had a magical timed portkey in which they had been traveling in to Hogwarts's. They had been sucked into the portkey activated but the two boys. Lily explained that once they had appeared in the graveyard they reunited with Harry, upon touching his shoulder a scream was heard and his scar began to bleed. It had not dawn on the bright witch that the scream was apart of Riddles soul dying. The dark lord was weakened but he managed to cast the killing curse minutes before at Cedric. The three of them weakened the dark lord ultimately killing him with a strong Patronus.

Everyone cheered for the defeat of Tom Riddle but mourned for the lose of a classmate. The weeks following had been a whirlwind of news reports of other deaths in the Wizarding Britain along with getting to know the late Potters. Hermione felt a hand tough her arm and she jumped to see harry looking at her. Embarrassed she turned her attention back to Dumbledore.

"The Ministry of Magic has enforced a new law in which will effect those in Fifth Year and above. The law will be for you to be paired with someone whom is a match to your magical core, you are to marry and produce one child by then end of this year." A loud mummer began in the hall, Hermione felt as if she had been hit with the Stupfy spell Marry?! Marry?! I am only sixteen and I'm getting married! A-and I cant even chose who I am to marry…and I'll have to have children with that man she shuddered "Each couple will have their own apartment here at Hogwarts. Now you will soon have a letter appear on your plate enclosed in it is the name of your soon to be spouse. This Hogsmead weekend each couple will be betrothed then you may join the rest of your class at Hogsmead" the old wizard smiled at his students. "Now please enjoy your food and tuck in." His view swept the hall then fell on Ron stuffing his face.

Hermione rolled her eyes and took a sip of her juice. God please don't let me marry that git. Owls swept above each house table dropping a red letter to the students. Hermione watch as her's landed on her lap. She heard a giggle and turned to her left, Lavender Brown grinned as she ripped open her letter. She squeeled then got up and ran to her Won Won. "ohhh! Ronni! Oh I knew we where ment to be!" She threw her arms around his neck wiggling her way to his lap.

Ron had a look of shock, as his letter fell into his mashed potatoes, the turkey leg he had been eatting still in his hand. He barely gurgled out, "umm yeah…married?…" Then he stared at his food while his new Fiancée kissed his neck and face.

Hermione grimaced at the public display then looked over at Harry and just starred at the unopened letter in his hands. Hermione looked over her food she barely touched then to her parents whom sat chatting with the other parents. She moved to get up when she realized Harry was following her to the parent table. When she got there her mother sat chatting with Lily and her dad whom was listening to James explain Quitich nodded, hanging on to his every word.

Her mother looked over and smiled at her, "Oh honey this school is amazing!" she noticed her mother eyed the red letter in her hands but she continued on, "I didn't understand the new law that your principle is enforcing. You are getting married and not to someone you love!" Hermione sighed and starred at the letter.

"Mom, our Headmaster didn't enforce the Marriage Law the Ministry did. And yes I will have to marry," she shuddered at the thought, "And have a child." A chill went through her what if it was Malfory, what a joyous marriage that would be.

The thoughts continued when a familiar voice pulled her out of it. "I'm sure you are going to go to the Library to research the law, it must have something about the guidelines somewhere." Harry stood next to her and a idea went off in her head.

"That brilliant Harry!" She turned to leave when her mother spoke that she would like to see more of the amazing school and Lily voiced she missed the Hogwarts library.

The three women walked to the library, Hermione leading the way with Lily pointing out things to Hermione's mother, Emma. Emma absorbed the information just as her daughter does, and gawked at the number of books in the room. "Not even my University had this many!" Lily laughed at the women's reaction and the two found a nice seat in front of a window over looking the lake. Hermione scanned the shelves until she came to find a book of the history of Wizarding Marriages. She sat her bag down and took a seat next to it on the floor. The book had everything from how to have a wedding to what you wear. She scanned the pages when she found a chapter on Marriage Laws.

Ch.46: Marriage Law

The first note of a Marriage Law being contracted took place between Godric Gryffindor and Rowena Ravenclaw. The Law had been created by the king of Wizarding Britain to increase the population due to the Great War of Wizards . The terms of the Law stated that the couple whose soul matched would be betrothed and to produce children as their heirs. A Marriage of any kind in the Wizarding world cannot be broken, only can death separate the souls.

Hermione paused, slapping the book closed with a sigh. The two women turned from their conversation to stare at her. Hermione fingered the red envelope.

"Hermione, dear?" Lily Potters voice snapped her out of her gaze. With the Gryffindor Courage she had she ripped open the Envelope, and unraveled the letter.

To Ms. Hermione Jane Granger,

Stated under the new law of the ministry you are to wed, Mr. Harry James Potter, on October 31st, 1995. May your marriage be prosperous and your children grow strong.

Minister Cornelius Fudge of the Ministry of Magic

Hermione gasped, dropping the letter. Both older women looked alarmed.

"Hermione? What is wrong?" Emma asked worriedly.

Hermione ignored her mother, and snatched the letter before running out of the library. She couldn't believe it she had to marry her best friend! Her feet carried her she didn't realize where she was until she had reached the Astronomy tower. Where she crumbled to the ground, a sob making its way up her throat and bubbling out of her mouth.

No! She thought this would ruin everything! The sixteen year old ducked her head against her robs as the tears ran down her face. Hermione feared for her friendship with Harry. All she could feel was the fear and anxiety seeping through her the cold October winds where nothing compared to her heart.
