This is for my sister, Sunni.
Valentine's Day
It had been a little over 2 years since Eddie had passed away and even though their relationship had been over for quite some time before his death Catherine still felt some anguish at his being gone. Not just for Lindsey but for herself too. There had been no one else since then and she was lonely. She missed having a man in her life; someone to make her feel wanted, special. Eddie hadn't always been bad to her and when he loved her it was good.
As she walked into her office she felt a full blown pity party coming on and it took all that she had not to start crying. It was Valentine's Day and she was all alone. Then she saw the pink box on her desk. Pink had always been her favorite color but only a handful of people knew that. Her curiosity got the best of her and she quickly grabbed it. There was no note. She opened the box and gasped when she saw the contents.
Inside the box was a heart shaped diamond encrusted pendant hanging from a gold chain. She was shocked, who on earth would have given this gift too her. It was beautiful. She didn't have a clue but she had to find out. She figured that she would wear the necklace that night and look for telltale clues whenever she was with her co-workers. As she put the necklace on she made sure that it was visible for all to see. As she left her office the game would begin.
She headed towards the break room. Greg and Nicky were both there playing video games. She thought to herself, Greg would have never given me a gift like this but Nicky is a definite possibility. He had always hinted towards a relationship with her but she didn't feel the same way. He was like a younger brother to her. "Hey guys, are we working or just hanging out tonight?" she asked them. "Hey Cath", they both chimed together in unison without even looking at her. Okay, she thought, time to move on to my next suspect. As we walked by the lab she saw Hodges and Wendy making eyes at each other. Okay, definitely not Hodges, not that that disappointed her. He was so not her type.
That only left two possible suspects—Ecklie and Grissom. Dear lord, I hope to the heavens above that Ecklie did not give me this necklace. That man makes my blood boil she thought to herself as she headed towards Grissom's office.
From the hall she could see him sitting at his desk. They had always been friends but Gil was not the romantic type. In fact, in all the years that they had worked together he had never been in a relationship that she was aware of.
She picked up the courage to knock on his door. Looking up at her he smiled as their eyes met. "Come on in Cath and please shut the door behind you. She did as he asked and when she turned around she was surprised to find him now standing in front of her.
He was the first to speak. "I see you got my gift. I hope that you like it; it looks nice on you."
Shocked she replied "I, I love it but I don't know what to say. I mean, deep down I had hoped that it was from you but what does this mean?" she asked him.
He walked over to her and cupped her face with his hands before kissing her passionately. "It means Happy Valentine's Day Catherine." And with that he turned around and walked out of his office leaving her standing there with a perplexed look on her face.
