People had always played a large part in Parker's life. She had been shuttled through the group homes and tried out by just a few families before eventually being labeled unadoptable and being permanently pulled into what others considered to be the bad life by the older kids. Parker didn't consider her life bad. She loved the thrill of thieving and the rush of successfully pulling off a heist. She even loved jumping off of the buildings - the taller the building, the better - and leaving the cops far behind.
But she was lonely. She even felt alone when she was in a crowd. No matter how many people surrounded her, she was still alone until these last couple of years. She had people now. They didn't just have her; she had them. They'd never once let her down, but still she worried that they would.
She'd been left so many times. She had never known a single person who'd deserved her trust until now, and still she had nightmares of being left behind. Now she stood at another precipice, on the very edge of the tallest building in the city, with cops closing in on all sides, and for a rare change, no parachute for her pullstring had been cut in a fight.
"JUMP!" Alec screamed in her earbud. Her heart roared. "WE'LL CATCH YOU!"
"We're right beneath you, Parker," Elliot's voice chimed in.
"Parker," Sophie added, "we won't let you down."
"Jump," Nate commanded.
Parker closed her eyes as bullets flailed all around her. She jumped. Wind and memories rushed over her. Tears stung the back of her eyelids, but then she fell into the back seat between Alec and Elliot, her arms draping over them.
"Told ya we'd catch ya, girl." Alec grinned, hugging both her and Elliot.
The End
