Rose took her place at the Ravenclaw table. An old lady sitting at the teachers' table smiled at her. Her grey hair was tied up in a tight bun covered by her hat, which had a long green feather sticking out the top. Her eyes seemed enchanted with a magical past that Rose knew had been cursed at some point, though it was how that she didn't understand.
She was drawn out of her thoughts as Albus' name was called. She could see the worried look that rested on his face. She glanced at the Slytherin table where the first years had already formed a, somewhat unfriendly, alliance between them. She looked back at Albus who now had his eyes shut tight as the Sorting Hat sat upon his head, making the decision that would determine who he became. She saw him mutter something and the Sorting Hat grumbled before shouting, "Gryffindor!"
He would be happy, Rose knew that. The first thing she ever remembered him saying to her was that he wanted to be in Gryffindor like his mother and father. She held out her hand to him as he walked past to his place and he brushed it with his. The smile upon his face was all the magic in the world.
She turned back to the teacher who'd smiled at her. She seemed to be watching the sorting now, but her enchanted eyes still danced with memories.
When Rose arrived in her dormitory she flopped onto her bed. It was soft and warm and stars sparkled on the roof above it. It felt nice to be the first to experience this room. Everyone else in her family had been in Gryffindor. But she was proud to be in Ravenclaw. Her first day at Hogwarts had been truly magical.
