Prologue

His life was pathetic and he knew it. It wasn't that hard to figure out. A quick glance around his apartment gave him enough evidence. The plush white couch that he had only purchased a year ago wore almost every color imaginable. Ketchup stains from McDonald's takeout, dirt marks that roughly resembled a set of footprints, and smudges from lips he'd forgotten the minute he touched them showed the obvious use of his couch along the years. The coffee table, if there was still one, was covered with magazines and newspapers, all of them untouched and at least a week old. The television set lay precariously on the ground, its usual place on the table occupied by worn-out books instead. And this was only the living room.

Glancing about the room once more, Lukas let out a heavy sigh and wondered whether this what he really wanted and whether this was how he wanted his life to turn out. But the thought of even questioning what had gone wrong and what he should have done instead already gave him a sharp pain in the chest. Dejectedly, he did a quick double turn to face the kitchen, suddenly having no desire of looking at the reminder of what he had become. Pulling open the refrigerator, he grabbed the nearest can of Pepsi he could find. As he popped the top open, his eyes landed on the calendar before him.

July.

Time had flown by so fast that he couldn't believe it was already that time of year. He had been so busy being sad for himself that he hadn't realized that it was already July. Pepsi can in hand, Lukas couldn't help but freeze at the spot, his eyes glued to the one day that he knew he would never forget. He felt his throat tighten and his mouth suddenly become dry as all nervousness came back to him.

He couldn't believe he had almost forgotten. Rubbing his eyes and looking much more closely to the calendar once more, there was no mistaking that it was truly that month. That day.

All laziness suddenly gone from him, Lukas slammed his Pepsi on the table top, ran towards the door, opened it and stepped out into the hallway. Still early, he thought, smirking to himself as he tiptoed two apartments down to quickly borrow the newspaper.

July 29th.

The date stared back at him in the face, giving him proof and relief that he hadn't been imagining things at all. Dropping the newspaper back right where he found it, Lukas ran inside his apartment once again. He needed money, a map, a ride, his worn-out Beatles shirt and a shower. For the first time in two months, he had actually had something to look forward to. And this time, he was going to make sure it turned out the way he wanted it to.

A/N: Wow. I have to admit, I haven't written anything in the longest time. Can you believe it? I've been keeping this hidden for a while... but I haven't put it up until now. Anyways, you all know I'm the most horrible person when it comes to updating, so review mucho so I will soon, okie? Besides, reviews are love. :)
