Ghost and Darkness in Tsavo
I've come to Tsavo
I've come here to build
A bridge that links
Nothing to nowhere
The grasses are tall here
Within the savannah
We cannot see out, but
They can always see in
At night we sleep in a tent
Feet to head and head to feet
But cloth and fire are no saviour
And a scream pierces through camp
Chaos and clamour, feet running and leaping
A lion has stalked us and takes us as prey
No, there are two, and they stalk us and eat us
These giants, these monsters, they will kill us tonight
We put up our fences and made bigger our fires
They sneak through our forces and outwit our hunters
Muslim or Hindu or black or white, they do not choose
They eat and they slaughter us all, bellies never full
We call them the Ghost and the Darkness, for no lions are these
They must be demons here to kill us and claim our souls as well
I hear their roars and smell their breath and feel their hunger
They see me run and hear me scream and taste my fear and want it
These lions are demons, the guns do not kill them and they eat and eat
The Ghost and the Darkness are chasing me, they're after me, me, me!
I'm running and screaming and looking for help that I know will not come
And the last thing I know is blood and the pain and the teeth and demon eyes in the dark.
