Meryton Assembly Again!

A/N: Just a little courtship scene.

Disclaimer: However much I wish otherwise, the characters belong to Miss Jane Austen.

"Do I look fine, Jane?" asked Elizabeth while entering the morning room.

"You look lovely dear!" said a stern voice of Mr. Darcy.

"Mr. Darcy, I am sorry I did not see you," replied Elizabeth looking deep into his eyes "I thank you-sir."

Then the formal bows took place and the entire party consisting of Jane, Bingley, Darcy and Lizzy went to the breakfast room. It has only been 2 days since their engagement and they were happy, very happy just a little apprehensive .But it will pass with time.

"Good morning Mrs. Bennet!" said Bingley cheerfully and got an equal if not more enthusiastic reply. Mr. Bennet welcomed them and headed them towards an amicable breakfast.

After the breakfast was over Mr. Bennet retired to his library while the others to the morning room.

"Lizzy can I have your cream colored bonnet for the ball at the Meryton Assembly in the evening? It shall go perfectly with my green dress," asked Kitty enthusiastically.

"Of course!" said Elizabeth who did not want the gentlemen to hear all that was to follow had she declined.

Mr. Darcy looked at Elizabeth, almost startled and said, "I did not know that we were to attend a ball today."

"Do not worry Darcy. This year it will go well," said Bingley reassuringly.

Darcy knew this fact to be true but they had not yet announced their engagement. Everybody in that ballroom did not view Darcy as perfectly amiable and agreeable.

The evening came and Jane and Bingley entered the Assembly with their arms linked. Darcy and Elizabeth entered as indifferent acquaintances.

Soon after the formal bows a young man of Elizabeth's acquaintance asked her to dance the first two dances. Elizabeth couldn't think of any excuse so she consented to dance with Mr. George Firth, a local attorney. Mr. Darcy found himself in a similar situation- no, no he did not ask for it, Sir Lucas does not really let Darcy enjoy his solitary comfort at a ball.

Both Lizzy and Darcy were envious of each others' partners and rightly so. At one point of time their eyes met, Darcy looked at her in earnest gaze asking her to come to him. Though Lizzy wanted the same but as propriety dictates she declined. Unusually so, Darcy found himself all the more attracted to her Lizzy after her refusal. This made Lizzy a little angry all though it was more of pretentious and mock anger. And she reluctantly took her eyes off him. After another turn in their dance their eyes met again and both of them felt happy, really happy. Almost embarrassed or you can call it shy, Lizzy buried her face and tried to relocate all her attentions to the young fellow with whom she was dancing. Darcy followed her example and did the same with his partner, Miss Catherine Willows.

Well Lizzy and Darcy thought that this little clashing of their eyes went unnoticed and they were almost right but Mr. Bennet was not oblivious to his surroundings. The next day after the ball he called Mr. Darcy and Lizzy to the library and made himself perfectly clear as to hold an engagement ball at the earliest day possible. He jokingly added, "I have much better, or so I thought, things to do at Meryton Assembly."

Lizzy and Darcy looked at each other quizzically hoping that Mr. Bennet did not see the quick kiss in one of the Assembly balconies.

A/N : It was so much fun to write that.
