Kyouichi - November 2
10:17 am Kurosaki Clinic
"Damn it! Where is that fool?!"
Another yell escaped her as the contraction hit. She clutched her bed railings, her whole body stiffening.
"Breathe, Rukia-nee. They'll find him!" Yuzu wiped her sister-in-law's forehead with a damp cloth.
"They better hurry," Karin muttered. "She's almost dilated."
Another scream resounded around the hospital room.
The twins glanced at each other before going back to their nursing duties, both praying for the safety of their bother.
'Dad!" Karin yelled. "The contractions are getting closer! It's almost time!"

"Damn it, kid! Where the hell are ya?"
Renji landed next to a tree, leaning on it a bit.
It was supposed to be a simple information mission. What the hell happened?
"Lieutenant Abarai!"
"What?!" he barked.
"We think we've found him!"
Renji whirled around to face the Shinigami. "Are you sure?"
The young man (young to Soul Society standards) stopped right in front of Renji, panting from trying to move as fast as he could. "We found a.. a body. It's pretty bad but we think it's him. Orange hair, tall, tan, and double Zanpakuto."
"That's gotta be him! Take me there!"
The Shinigami immediately took off, Renji not a step behind him. The Shinigami led Renji almost a mile away from where they thought Ichigo should have been. They were deep into a forest that was so dense, almost no sunlight came through the roof of the trees even with all the leaves missing.
"Just up ahead."
Renji sped past the man and hurled himself forward. He hit a patch of even thicker trees and immediately saw the patch of orange hair among with roots he laid himself in.
"Ichigo.."
Renji approached quickly, knocking over the Soul Reapers who had been guarding his friend.
"We weren't sure we could move him without killing him, sir."
"No you're fine. Call for 7th Seat Hanatarou Yamada."
"Yes sir!"
Renji crouched down next to Ichigo. Or rather next to the cage of roots Ichigo had managed to wiggle himself into. It must have been real bad if Ichigo's first instinct had been to find a place to hide and wait for help. He grabbed one of the thicker roots and pulled and twisted and tugged and pushed until it broke free of the ground and he could tuck behind another root. He worked on the roots around that area so Hanatarou could work on Ichigo without over exerting his energy more than he needed.
"Lieutenant Abarai! I'm here!'
Renji didn't need to look over his shoulder. He simply moved a few more roots and scooted over to make room for the healer.
"Oh! Ichigo! Right! Clear away, please!"
Renji moved back so he wasn't touching Hanatarou at all.
"Do you know what happened to him, yet?"
Renji shook his head. "No. Are you going to be able to heal him?"
Hanatarou was silent as he retrieved several patches of sticky fabric from a bag Renji only just realized he had brought. "I know I can get to his more shallow wounds but the deeper ones.. I don't know if I can seal them in time. He's lost so much blood already."
Renji glanced around and couldn't help but agree. All around them, almost every tree had blood splattered on it. Branches had been hacked at and were hanging at strange angles, smaller whole trees had been crashed to the ground, and the ground had been painted deep red.
Whatever had happened had been bad.
"Lieutenant Abarai, you should know..."
When the healer hesitated, Renji turned his attention back to him. "What?"
"Uh.. Well.. Lieutenant Kurosaki.?.. She went into labor early this morning."
Renji's blood ran cold for a full minute. His brown eyes went wide. "What?"
"I don't know exactly what time but around noon I found out from some of my fellow squad members that I may be called to help with the delivery if something else were to happen. Since the Kurosaki's only have the father and the two sisters, if something were to happen and none of them could focus on Lieutenant Kurosaki then.."
"Yeah.. " Renji understood. They would have to call the Soul Society for help since all their human friends had all been out of town or super busy on their own. Renji doubted anyone but the Kurosaki's knew Rukia had gone into labor. And the only healers Ichigo and Rukia trusted completely were Hanatarou and Orihime.
After four hours, Renji thought he had turned into a Shinigami-cicle. Four hours is what they spent sitting in that cluster of trees. Four hours is what it took for Hanatarou to confirm that he had sealed the majority of Ichigo's wounds and he approved Renji moving forward and wiggling Ichigo out from under his root-cage.
He took as much care as he could but he eventually just had to grab under Ichigo's armpits and hauled him out.
"Careful!" Hanatarou exclaimed. "You could reopen his wounds!"
"I couldn't get him out otherwise!"
Renji straightened Ichigo out on the grass and let the healer resume his healing. It was another three hours before Hanatarou pulled out his own communicator and called for his medical squad to come retrieve Ichigo. Renji helped them place Ichigo on the gurney and ran with them as they went through the saikon gate.
They arrived in the fourth squad's healing barracks. Hanatarou threw up his arm in front of Renji, halting the Lieutenant.
"Lieutenant Abarai, I think your time would be better spent with Lieutenant Kurosaki. We can take it from here and I can keep you updated on his progress."
The healer didn't give the pineapple time to answer. He turned and took off after the disappearing team.
Renji stood there, dumbfounded. He shook his head, running his hands through his red hair, messing up his bandana.
"This is all so fucked up.." he muttered.

"Dad, the baby's coming!" Yuzu yelled.
The twins heard Isshin give a yell of frustration. He came into small room, his tension written all over his face.
"This is getting ridiculous! I called the Soul Society over an hour ago!"
"They'll send someone, Dad, don't panic. I can only deal with one of you at a time," Karin said, glancing at Yuzu as she spoke.
"I am not panicking, Karin!" Yuzu snapped.
"Alright, alright."

5:17 pm Human World, Karakura
Renji stepped through the gate almost an hour after getting Ichigo to the Fourth Barracks.
The gate dropped him off in front of the Urahara Shop. He glanced around to see if anyone was near before taking off down the street. He noticed that the sun was already setting.
Renji reached the Kurosaki Clinic in only a few minutes. He eased the door open and called out, "Hello?"
"Renji?!"
Karin whipped around into the waiting room, coming out of one of the back rooms. "About time someone showed up! Get back here!"
Renji followed the girl into the area where they had a few patient rooms. Rukia screamed again, making Renji stop for a split second. He cautiously poked his head around the door that Karin had disappeared into when another scream broke out. He saw Yuzu writing furiously on a clipboard while Karin leaned over a bed that Renji assumed held his friend. Isshin stood at the end of it, blocking his view.
"Damn. Alright, Yuzu, go take care of the kid in the other room. Dad, seal with door with a silencing kido or something. We can't have Rukia-nee freaking anyone out. You need to get that guy sewed up before he bleeds out. Renji and I will stay with Rukia."
Karin grabbed Yuzu and literally tossed her out of the door before her sister could protest properly. She reached for her father but he pulled away in time.
"Karin, you've never handled a birth on your own! What if something goes wrong?"
"Dad, that guy will die if you don't sew him up soon. Rukia had at least another hour before the baby's actually here. I'll watch her, get what she needs. You fix him and come back just in time. Now go!"
This time, she managed to grab him and throw him out. Renji didn't notice that she locked the door and pushed the desk that was seated near the door partially in front of it so no one could open it from the outside.
Renji walked - rather shakily - over to Rukia and asked the stupidest question he could have asked right then. "How are ya doin'?"
If looks could kill, Renji would be six feet under in under six seconds. "How.. do.. you.. THINK.. I'm doing.. Renji?!" she gritted out.
"Uhh.."
"Don't answer that, Renji. Just hold her hand." Karin threw a wet rag at him and motioned to Rukia. It took a second to register, but then Renji used the rag to wipe at Rukia's forehead and neck. "By the way, I lied."
"Huh?" Renji gave her a raised eyebrow. "About what?"
"The baby's coming now." Karin put on a white sheet looking thing and snapped her gloves over the edges to keep it tucked around her wrist so nothing would escape on her arm.
His hearing must be really bad after all that fighting he did over the years. She couldn't have said what he thought she said. "What?"
"I was the last one to check how far along Rukia-nee was. The baby is coming now."
"Wha- Why did you kick them out then!?"
"Because Renji! I am no good with people! I have no sewing ability whatsoever! What I do know how to do is delivery babies! It's the one thing in the medical field I know I can do! So I'm doing it! Now shut up and keep her calm!"
Renji gawked at her a moment more before Rukia screamed again and clutched his hand so tightly he thought it might break.
"Aah!"
"I said keep her calm, Renji!"
"Kind of hard to do when she's crushing my hand!"
Karin went to the end of the bed and began rolling the blanket until it reached Rukia's knees. "Ok, Rukia, when I tell you to you're going to have to push. Understand?"
"Uh.. " Rukia panted hard. "Yeah. Got it. Trust the doctor's daughter and sister."
"Good." Renji had to look away when Karin leaned in closer to Rukia. "Ok, just a bit more..."

5:43 pm Kurosaki Clinic
Isshin stitched the guy up as quick as he could and signed him out. It wasn't a deep gash. The guy would have been fine for another hour or so but Karin had been so determined to get him out-
"Oh no.."
Isshin rushed back to Rukia's room to find he couldn't open it.
"Karin! Open this door right now!"
When his daughter didn't answer, he pressed his ear to the door. He had put a silencing kido on the door - an old spell that most had forgotten - but had left wiggle room for Karin's voice to get through in case she needed help.
"Push, Rukia, push! The kid's almost here!"
Shit. He can't bang on the door then. He could upset Rukia then things could get complicated. He resigned to letting his head rest on the door, keeping his ears on Karin's voice.
"Come on, Rukia! Yes, you can! One more push and the kid's here! Come on, Rukia!"
It was quiet for exactly ten minutes. Isshin wanted so badly to bust the door down with his zanpakuto but knew he couldn't.
Then he heard one of the most amazing questions of his long life.
"Hey, Rukia-nee.. Would you like to meet your son?"
123456789
5:53 pm
Rukia was so tired. She hurt but couldn't quite register the pain as one she cared about. She was hazily aware that Karin still had her child after a while and it was still sniffling after wailing it's lungs out. She was relieved to hear her baby crying. Rukia calmed her breathing and glanced up at Renji. The poor man looked like he had just been through hell.
That thought made Rukia smile. She had just given birth and he looked like hell. Ha.
"Hey, Rukia-nee.. Would you like to meet your son?"
Her heart stopped for just a second. Just long enough for her to fear it wouldn't start again. Violet eyes turned slowly before they landed on Karin holding a small bundle in her arms.
Karin walked over to the bed. Rukia still held Renji's hand but it was more to ground herself than for support.
"Hold your arms like you carry books," Karin said softly.
"Huh?"
Karin smiled. "Your arms."
Rukia gave her a quizzical look before realizing what she wanted. "Oh.." Rukia released Renji's hand and slowly brought her arms in front of her. Karin cradled the baby into Rukia's waiting arms.
Rukia held the baby for a full minute before she could muster the courage to use one arm to hold him and lifted the fold of the blanket with the other. Immediately, tears started flowing and she found she didn't care a damned bit.
Her baby.. her son.. had her raven hair and her violet eyes. His hair was as spikey as his father's and had a pudgy little frown that made Rukia laugh a bit.
He was beautiful and perfect for a first baby between Rukia Kuchiki-Kurosaki and Ichigo Kurosaki.
"Have you guys decided on any names yet?" Karin asked. She began removing what blankets she could while Rukia held the baby. "Renji, as carefully as you can, lift Rukia-nee up so I can change the blankets real quick. Rukia, stay as relaxed as you can."
"Ah!" Rukia gasped in pain when Renji scooped her up. She clutched the baby to her so she wouldn't drop him. "Uh.. We talked about a few but there's only one that we both like."
Karin changed the sheets as quickly as she could and motioned for Renji to set her sister-in-law back down then threw a comforter over Rukia's legs. "We'll get you in the shower in a minute." She walked over to a wall and started unraveling a hose.
"What name?" Renji asked. He hadn't moved more than an inch away from the bed.
Rukia looked long and hard at the baby. "Where's Ichigo, Renji?"
Karin looked at the red pineapple from the corner of her eye. He had gone pale and his eyes were wide. She watched as he sighed and scratched the back of his head.
"We found him. Hanatarou's healing him now. He.. He was pretty bad, Rukia. Whatever happened on this mission.. It was bad."
"Message Hanatarou, please. Let him know so he can tell Ichigo when he wakes up."
"Yeah, alright.. I'll be back then.."
Renji moved away from the bed and there was a furious pounding on the door.
"KARIN! Open this door! We wanna meet the baby too!" Isshin and Yuzu both whined.
Karin sighed. Rukia smiled. Renji was slightly confused as to when Karin had blocked the door.
"Hold on! We're still cleaning up! Renji, help me a sec."
"Where do you need me?"
"I need you to actually stand over here and control the water pressure for me."
Renji walked widely around Rukia's bed (there was still birth bits everywhere on the floor around her) and stepped next to the nozzle Karin had pointed him to.
"This way for more, this way for less. I'll tell you what I need."
Karin turned the water on and Renji watched as she walked, carefully pointing the spray away from Rukia and the baby, directing him to the flow she needed.
"Where's all that going, anyway?" He asked after watching some blood and stuff disappear down a drain under Rukia's bed.
"This room is designed for births so the floor is actually tilted towards the drain," Karin explained, "The drain leads to a tank that filters the water to make it clean. The water then goes back to the tank the hose is hooked up to and whatever was in the water gets thrown into a garbage septic tank that gets picked up once a week like the regular trash bins outside."
"Sensible. So clearly your dad didn't think of that," Renji joked.
Karin actually laughed. She washed the last bit down the drain and stepped back to do a final sweep. "Yeah, he doesn't seem the sensible type, does he?"
When she had finished and was sure she had gotten it all, Renji helped her roll the hose back up and run something she called a squeegee over the floor to remove the excess water.
They put everything back in it's place and made sure Rukia was still comfortable. Karin sighed. "Alright.. Let them in.. I guess."
Renji pushed the desk back and jumped away from the door. If he hadn't, Isshin and Yuzu would have ran his ass over. They immediately rushed to Rukia's bed and cooed over the baby and fired about twenty questions a second at Rukia. Renji went to the hall, summoned a hell butterfly and quickly recited a message for the healer in charge of Ichigo. When he stepped back into the room, they were still asking questions. Well... Yuzu was asking questions. Isshin only wanted the name of his first grandchild.
"What color are his eyes? Oh! They're violet like yours!"
"What are you going to name him?"
"Do you think Ichi-nii will be disappointed that he looks so much like you?"
"NAME, PLEASE!"
Rukia smiled at her in-laws. "Like I was saying, we have talked about names. We just didn't let anyone offer any. There was only one name that we liked for a first born boy." Her smile dropped a bit as she gazed at the now sleeping baby in her arms. "Considering his daddy might not have made it if they hadn't found him, I think it's only fair to change it a little bit." She laughed. "No doubt, he'll have something to say about that!"
The Kurosaki's and Renji waited, though very impatient.
"So.. I've decided that that name shall be yours, little one," she whispered. "You will be Kyouichi, my little berry."
Karin tried her best to hide her smile but couldn't do it. She left to take the sheets to the washer. Yuzu started crying so hard, Renji had to hand her a towel so she could see to leave the room. Isshin's smile threatened to eat his face in a very unpleasant way but the man didn't seem to care.
Renji watched his most beloved friend hold her child with all the love and care she had. He couldn't help the sudden swell of emotion in his chest. He was happy that she had finally gotten herself a life she loved. He was proud of the warrior she was. He was all that and so much more when it came to Rukia Kuchiki-Kurosaki.
When Karin could finally control her face, he helped her clean the rest of the room and watched over Kyou as she got Rukia into a nearby shower before moving the two of them to a new, cleaner room.
Karin set Kyou in a basenet near Rukia's bed after kicking Renji out and showing the new mother how to properly breastfeed and letting the pair do their new thing.
She glanced over at Rukia and smiled when she saw that the Shinigami had already fallen asleep. She went to the light switch and turned off the bright over head light. Karin turned back to Kyou who also slumbered.
She ran her fingers over the patch of surprisingly thick hair. The baby yawned and wiggled. Karin smiled and left the room, closing the door carefully behind her.

6:05 pm Soul Society
A baby's scream is what alerted him that he hadn't died.
Amber eyes fluttered open, accompanied with a heavy groan.
"Kurosaki? Ichigo, can you hear me?"
A raspy groan this time.
"Oh good, he's waking up. Get me some water for him to drink! Quickly!"
"Yes, sir!"
Ichigo hissed when he felt a pressure on his left shoulder.
"Oh! I'm sorry. You must still be sore. It hasn't kicked in yet then.."
Ichigo's eyes finally creaked open. Immediately, he was greeted with a soft light above him. Not quite blinding but bright enough he had to turn his head slightly.
"You shouldn't move yet. You've been badly injured."
Ichigo didn't heed the voice. He struggled to open his eyes fully and make them focus.
"Wh.. Wha..."
"Oh! Hold on!"
Something appeared behind his head and pulled it up. Something cold and very welcomed met his lips. Ichigo drank greedily, unable to stop himself.
"Careful, careful."
Ichigo was eased back onto his pillow after he drained the cup. He opened his eyes slowly and glanced around. "Hanatarou?"
"Ah! You are awake. Good. Can you tell me where it hurts?"
Ichigo winced. "Everywhere..."
Hanatarou nodded. "Alright. I'm going to give you something that will help you sleep while the kido bandages heal you. Otherwise you're going to be in pain all night. Then in the morning, as long as you're healed right, I'll have Lieutenant Abarai escort you to your father's clinic." He moved over out of Ichigo's vision and rummaged around.
"Ok- Wait, why?"
Hanatarou froze. "Uh.." he gave Ichigo a fake smile. "No reason in particular. I just thought you'd rather recover in a more familiar surrounding."
"You're lying. What happened, Hanatarou?"
Hanatarou placed something on Ichigo's forehead. He could feel himself getting sleepy but tried his damnedest to fight it.
The last thing he heard before the darkness consumed him was Hanatarou's timid voice.
"Rukia went into labor. You have a son."

2:07 am Soul Society
It was dark. He couldn't see more than a few inches in front of him for some while.
Ichigo limped his way through the fourth squad barracks, hoping he could get out without alerting anyone he didn't want to.
He held back a hiss as he stumbled into a wall corner, trying to keep quiet.
By some miracle, he made it to where he was told the Captain-Commander slept, which was actually really close to where the captains held their meetings.
He stumbled a few more times before finally making it to the doors. He knocked as loudly as he dared and waited.
Not surprising, it was Nanao that answer the door. Her blue eyes were sleepy and irritated before she realized who was at her door.
"Kurosaki! You should be resting! What are you doing up?" she demanded.
"I need a saikon gate to my family's clinic and I'm too weak to make one," he said simply.
"Uh.."
"Ehh.. What's going on, Nanao?"
Ichigo looked past the first lieutenant at her captain. "I'm sorry to disturb you so late but I need a saikon gate and I'm too weak to summon one. Can you do it?"
Kyouraku scratched the back of his head, yawning widely. "Shouldn't you be resting? I mean they did find you basically buried under a tree.."
"Heh. Yeah, right off I have no idea how I ended up there. But please, Kyouraku, I need to get there. Something's happened and I need to be there, not here."
When he still didn't look convinced, Ichigo pulled up his sleeves. "Hanatarou put these kido bandages on me. As long as no one else with spiritual pressure touches them, they'll continue to heal me. I wrapped them around the still more severe wounds so they would keep working. I don't plan on taking them off unless Hanatarou tells me I can."
The Captain-Commander looked long and hard at the man in front of him. He knew what issue Ichigo was talking about, having been informed by the healer hours ago that something like this might happen.
Hanatarou sure knew this kid well.
"Eh! alright, alright.. Gimme a second. I gotta go get Katen Kyōkotsu."
Nanao sighed and pushed her glasses back up her nose. She stepped out of the way when Kyouraku made to pass her.
He stepped a few feet from the door, stabbed the air, and turned his zanpakuto. Almost immediately, a standard size door appeared around zanpakuto. He withdrew his sword and the door slowly opened.
"This should put you right outside the clinic, Ichigo. I wish you the best of luck."
The captain tipped his head to Ichigo before going back inside and shutting the door, dragging Nanao with him.
Ichigo stepped through the gate.

2:43 am Kurosaki Clinic
Ichigo stared at the building in front of him. He took a deep breath and walked to the door. He carefully eased it open and slipped inside.
He was silent as he made his way through the small waiting room to the back where he knew his wife and... son... would be.
Ichigo still couldn't wrap his head around it yet. He was sure he heard Hanatarou right. But there was that sliver of doubt in the back of his mind..
Only one of the doors were closed so Ichigo chose that one. He winced when the door squeaked as he tried to open it. He got inside as quickly as he could and shut the door.
When he turned around, his heart stopped and his breath hitched.
There on the single bed in the room, lay Rukia curled up on her side facing a small bassinet that was stationed next to her.
Hardly daring to believe what he was seeing, Ichigo felt like he was floating towards the baby bed until he stood next to it and peered inside.
Raven hair and a pudgy frown. Ichigo smiled. The baby had no blanket and only wore a light blue onsie that had no legs but looked like a blanket that had been sown shut.
Tiny, new blue-violet eyes opened and met wide, much older amber. Father and son held each other's gaze for along while before Ichigo realized something. It was his son's crying that woke him up after the Shinigami found him. He had no idea how but he knew he was right.
Ichigo smiled. He reached in and picked Kyou up. After years of babysitting, lifting his own son was as easy as breathing.
He held Kyou's feet to his chest and his head out so he could look the baby over. His amber eyes scanned over every inch, memorizing every detail.
123456789
Rukia stirred in her bed. She twisted and stretched.
She rubbed her eyes and blinked rapidly.
"Ichigo?"
He flicked his eyes up to her before returning them to their son. " I'm sorry, Rukia."
She knew why but she asked anyway. "For what?"
"Not being there. For letting that thing get the best of me before finally killing it. For letting you go through it alone.."
Rukia smiled. "I wasn't alone. Renji and Karin helped."
Ichigo quirked an eyebrow at her. "And he didn't pass out?"
"Nope. I think he was more afraid of what you would do to him if he had rather than what I did to his hand." She watched the two for a moment. "He's beautiful, isn't he?"
Ichigo nodded. "How much of a hassle was Dad when Karin kicked him out?"
Rukia chuckled. "I don't think he realized what she had planned until it was too late. Some people came in about an hour before the baby was actually born. A man who had an impressive gash on his arm close to an artery; then there was a child with something wrong with it's leg."
"Yeah, Karin doesn't do well with people. But she's an amazing midwife. I'm glad she did what she did. Of all of them, it would be her that I would want each time."
She frowned. "And what makes you think we're doing this again?"
He chuckled now. "I don't know. Guess I lost more blood than I thought."
"Obviously."
Ichigo walked around to the other side of the bed. Rukia moved over and Ichigo sat on the bed and swung his legs up. Rukia waited until Ichigo got settled with his knees propped up and Kyou settled it the groove his stomach and legs made before scooting herself closer and nestling into his side. Ichigo wrapped his arm around Rukia and placed his free hand on Kyou's stomach so he wouldn't roll off.
Rukia was asleep almost immediately. Ichigo closed his eyes and laid back. He allowed himself to fall into an alert doze.
123456789
4:30 am
Karin jolted awake.
"Ugh.." She pushed herself away from her desk and stretched. She glanced at the clock to her left and scoffed at the time. She sat there for a minute or two before sighing. "Well I'm awake. Might as well go check on Rukia-nee."
Karin slipped on her house slippers - the hardwood floors always got cold in the early morning - and trudged downstairs. She stopped by the kitchen to sneak a snack and a cold soda, amused at the thought of Yuzu having a fit if she found out, and made her way across the house to the clinic.
She open the doors as quietly as she could and tiptoed to the back rooms.
The door was silent as Karin pushed it open. She peeked in and froze for a second, registering what she was seeing, before smiling a little. Karin retreated away from the room and went to the closet down the hall. There, she picked out a hospital blanket and a small baby blanket before heading back to Rukia's room.
She eased the door open and crept inside. She tossed the blanket over Rukia's legs, tucking the rest around her shoulders and over Ichigo's legs under Kyou. She carefully eased Kyou out of Ichigo's grip and placed him inside the bassinet then placed the small baby blanket over the bottom half of the bassinet. Karin arranged it so the blanket wasn't actually touching Kyou but was positioned to hold heat inside. She then tucked Ichigo and Rukia's blanket closer to Ichigo, unconsciously checking for signs of bleeding as well.
As she made to leave, a soft cooing sound stopped her. She turned and found Kyou's bright purple eyes staring at her. They made her feel like he knew exactly who she was and what her place in his life would be.
Karin stepped up to the bed and leaned down to place a soft kiss on the baby's temple. She bent low to his ear and whispered to him. "You, Kyouichi Kurosaki, have two amazing parents. You have a crazy grandfather and loving aunts as well. Never forget that all of us would do anything to see you happy and safe. Never forget, Kyou."
She placed another small kiss on him and left the room.
