11th September 2011
The team sat in front of the TV in the boardroom watching '9 11 ten years on.' Jack had earlier announced that the rift was quiet and he'd be in the boardroom watching, they were welcome to join.
"Oh God. When this happened me and Rhys had just moved in together, just finished unpacking. Rhys just plugged in the TV and turned the news on. Where were you when this happened?" Gwen asked softly.
"In UNIT." Tosh answered no louder than a whisper, everyone knew she hated speaking about her time in UNIT. "Only time the guards talked to me. They told me what happened."
"At work. It was a quiet day, I was just checking on a patient, Jake, he was watching the news, Katie rung me at the same time and told me to watch." Owen told Gwen.
"At Rhiannon's." That was all Ianto gave.
"Inside the south tower." Jack whispered. The others weren't sure if they heard right and turned to look at him in shock and question. "Business meeting." Jack explained. "When the plane hit..." Jack stopped and closed his eyes in memory. Ianto who was closest placed a comforting hand on Jacks arm. "I was on the floor which the plane hit; it was...God there was so much screaming. When I woke up it had already collapsed. I was in a...room with 5 others still alive all injured. Lots more people dead...everyone alive was surprised I was alive they thought I had died. I WAS dead." Jack stopped again, "There was a gap, only small. I got through it, I found others I brought them into the bigger space, I climbed everywhere I could...we stuck for...I don't know how long, weeks...months. Everyone around me died." Jack stopped again breathing softly everyone was silent around Jack letting him speak but they weren't going to force him to. "When they found me...When I was found, it was a man, searching for his son. We still talk sometimes, Phil. I still remember seeing the sky. I knew I would survive and that's...horrible. I knew I would live when hundreds of others died." Jack stopped again and shook his head. He couldn't say anymore.
He stood up and left the room, he had to be on his own. The rest of the team were still silent for a while after Jack left, Gwen spoke first, "God, why hasn't he ever said anything?"
"I doubt it's very easy to talk about." Ianto murmured.
An: I was 6 years old when 911 happened; all I remember were teachers being late telling us to come in after Lunch break and many parents being late picking us up after school. I can't come close to imagining how it felt being there, seeing it as it happened, but I wanted to do a tribute for it, I hope it was ok.
All my condolences to anyone who knew someone in 911.
