AN: This is a side-story to Step Two, what happened in the hospital room? Songfic/drabble

Whatever it Takes

A strangled smile fell from your face
It kills me that I hurt you this way
The worst part is that I didn't even know
Now there's a million reasons for you to go
But if you can find a reason to stay

The waiting room wasn't where he wanted to be. Not now, not ever. Not even when she was having their kids. He wanted to be right there, with her, one hundred percent of the way. But now he was stuck in the waitng room, and nothing was changing. She'd gone in for surgery six hours ago, but there was no progress.

I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
Believe that I can change
I'll keep us together whatever it takes

He thought back to the conversations they'd had, hoping for some kind of break in his thoughts. He'd just got done telling her that he loved her and wanted to work things out with her, but she didn't offer much of a response. She said "If we're gonna make this work you gotta let me inside even though it hurts. Don't hide the broken parts that I need to see." She said "Like it or not it's the way it's gotta be, you gotta love yourself if you can ever love me."

He thought of her uncertain words. How could he have been so blind all this time to the way she felt? Closing his eyes, he leaned back and waited for news of her condition. It was then that he heard someone walking through the hall. "Katie isn't going to make it," The man spoke. "Not without a lot of effort and donations."

I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
And give me a break
I'll keep us together, I know you deserve much better

He left the waiting room. He couldn't breathe. He would never see Katie again, and she didn't even know that he loved her. It was all his fault. If he had just told her from day one, maybe she'd still be here with them. Closing his eyes, he leaned against the glass in the emergency room, waiting for good news. No good news came.

The first bit of good news finally came when Logan came to tell him there was a change in Katie's condition. He ran down the halls like a bat out of hell, looking for a nurses' station. She said he wasn't allowed in…he didn't care. He went in anyway. Sitting beside her bed, he started humming, then softly sang;

But remember the time I told you the way that I felt
That I'd be lost without you and never find myself
Let's hold onto each other above everything else
Start over, start over

Security finally showed up and pulled him away. He held his ground, yanking his arms away. He faught with every breath in his body. "I'll do whatever it takes to turn this around! I know what's at stake, I know I've let you down! And if you give me a chance, and believe that I can change, I'll keep us together whatever it takes!" James shouted, pulling at the men whom had him bound. He tried to fight them off, but it was no use, they were stronger. "Whatever it takes, Katie!"

This song seemed to fit. When I wrote that chapter, this was the song running through my head. I wanted to write this, but not actually as part of the story. It's just something as a "side story". Read and review.
