"I want a Firebolt, Father," Draco said one evening from the doorway of Lucius's personal study.

Lucius looked up from his desk, where he had been examining some papers.

"Why?" he asked.

"Because Potter has one," Draco explained.

Lucius sighed to himself. Of course it would have something to do with Potter. If it wasn't Granger that was upsetting Draco, then it was Potter.

"You should not be jealous of Potter," Lucius spoke. "He lives a tragic existence. He doesn't have a father and a mother to spoil him. Instead, he has filthy Muggles that he has to go home to each summer. And from what I've heard, they hate anything that has to deal with magic."

"Eh, Muggles," Draco said, making a face of disgust. "But that's exactly my point, Father. Someone like Potter shouldn't be having a better broomstick than me."

"The Firebolt will eventually be replaced by a new and better broomstick," Lucius sighed, struggling to keep the annoyance out of his voice. "And eventually that broomstick will be replaced as well and so on and so forth. Besides, what have you done to deserve a Firebolt? Are you finally doing better than Granger in your classes?"

"I don't want to talk about Granger," Draco muttered, looking away from his father.

"Well, it has become clear to me that we need to talk about her more," Lucius drawled. "All her grades have been better than yours the past two years. She is a Mudblood, Draco, a Mudblood; yet she is putting you, a Pureblood, to shame. So far, you have failed to show her why Purebloods are superior. If you want a Firebolt so badly, you need to earn it. And in order to earn it, you need to study more."

"I do study," Draco protested.

"But clearly not enough," Lucius replied. His face then softened ever so slightly. "I know that you're plenty smart enough to do better than Granger, Draco. You just need to apply yourself more."

"But why should I have to work as hard as a Mudblood?" Draco asked. "I'm better than her."

"Our family would not be as successful as it is today if our ancestors had been as lazy and as unmotivated as you," Lucius said sharply. "Our ancestor, Armand Malfoy, was only able to earn this piece of land which this manor is standing on through his hard work and dedication. Since there, it has been more hard work that has kept our family prosperous. Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you, Draco?"

"Yes, Father, I do," Draco replied. "I'll go do some studying right now. I'll show Granger that she's nothing compared to me."

"That's the spirit," Lucius responded.

Draco turned to leave, but then he paused to look at his father.

"What about that Firebolt?" he pressed.

"Prove to me that you deserve it," Lucius said, "and I'll consider buying you one."

Draco looked somewhat disappointed, but he nodded his head.

"Then I will go and make you proud, Father."

Author's Note: According to Harry Potter Wiki, Armand Malfoy obtained the land where he founded Malfoy Manor through his services to William the Conqueror.
