I lifted the baby out of my wife; being more gentle than I had ever been with anything before. More so then I was even with my Bella. I looked down at the baby in my hands and time seemed to stop.
She turned her head to look at me, as I cradled her in my arms. Her copper hair was the exact same as mine, right down to the same messy texture of it. It fell in tight ringlets framing her angelic face. Her chocolate eyes stared up at me, unblinking. Almost without thinking I smiled down at her.
The feeling that had erupted inside me was like nothing I had ever felt before, not once in my long existence. The closest I had ever come was when I realised my love for Bella for the first time. It was as if my stone heart had swelled to twice its normal size, like my world had completely changed. This little girl, so delicate and pale, had become my life. I couldn't even remember what it felt like before I held her. Before I loved her. She was my daughter. Something I had been ready for since I was 16 years old. Something I had long since condoned as impossible for me to have. Even when Bella fell pregnant, I never thought for a second about the child. What they meant. My whole concern had been for Bella, my Bella…except…she wasn't just mine anymore. She was this little girl's too. I was a parent. A father. A Dad.
And in that second I swore I would not let anything happen to this little girl. To my little girl. I would protect her with everything I had. I would die for her and not let any harm come to her.
"Renesmee" I whispered instinctively, looking down at her. my epiphany had lasted less than a second, yet I knew my life would never be the same again. I was a father. And I had a purpose, to protect my family. My wife and my daughter.
