Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
--Queensryche
The tires of the Impala thrummed over the interstate, the headlights illuminated the broken yellow center line, and the cracked highway stretched on into the darkness. Dean drove in muted silence, the ever-present rattling of classic rock oddly absent. Half in shock, half in fearful respect, he refused to turn on the speakers, knowing that the quietude would, in some little way, help Sam.
Sam, on the other hand, sat numbly in the passenger seat. There could have been a brass band playing the rumba in the backseat and he wouldn't have heard a thing. Nothing could penetrate his deadened brain, his mind replaying the last scene he saw clearly, refusing to let him go.
"Wait here for me," Sam whispered, tears flowing freely down his face.
Dean could only nod slightly, a single drop slipping from his lashes as Sam walked bravely, painfully, into the next room.
Sam didn't see that tear, didn't know that Dean's heart was breaking. For him. All he felt was the excruciating dagger piercing his own heart as he walked toward Madison.
Her back was to him, her long dark hair curling softly over her shoulders. Sam placed his left hand gently on her hair and rested his cheek against hers, breathing deeply, savoring her soft perfume. She took one long, shuddering breath, and turned around, clasped close in his strong arms.
She looked up into his eyes and saw all of his pain, all of his torment, and all of his longing. As he looked at her, she let him see nothing but forgiveness.
He bent down to kiss her and their lips barely brushed each other; they breathed in each other's breath, shared each other's soul.
The gun fired.
Sam sits now in the passenger seat of the Impala as it rumbles down the highway, his old blue and white striped shirt (the one Madison had worn) clenched firmly in his hands, wrapped safely around her memory.
