I live my life a quarter-mile at a time.... For those ten seconds or less, I'm free.
His own words echoed through Dominic's head. The words that followed them were less philosophical. What a crock of shit!
His chest rattled as he tried to choke down another sob. Beside him, Mia was crying freely. Leon was hugging her with one arm, trying to give what comfort he could while dealing with his own grief.
In front of the trio was a simple pine box. It was all they could afford if they were going to live in Mexico long with what they had. However, Dominic had insisted that they give Letti proper funerary rites. The priest stood in front of them now, heaping the praises of God over Letti's lifeless form.
After they had crossed the border, they thought they were home free. They hunted down a decent doctor. Dom himself had been battered and bruised by his tumble, and his left arm had been fractured, but nothing too serious. Letti hadn't been so lucky.
The first time Dom had lain eyes on her after her car had flipped, he saw the blood coming out of her mouth. He'd thought that she'd bitten her tongue or had a few teeth knocked loose...if only that had been the case. She'd been bleeding internally for about five hours when they had stopped at the Mexican hospital. The doctors couldn't do anything for her but keep her comfortable.
Dominic mentally reviewed the steps that had led to her death. He had come up with the idea of jacking trucks. He had insisted on one last run despite Letti's objections. He hadn't let Leon stop until they were at least 100 miles from the border. He, he, he....It was all his fault. He'd killed the woman he loved.
Jessie was dead. They had no idea if Vince had survived. No one knew what to do now, especially not him. The only thing Dom wanted to do was crawl into that box with Letti, and let them bury him with her.
I live my life a quarter-mile at a time...I'd walk a million just to tell Letti how much I really love her. Just to let her know how much she means to me. Just to touch her one more time...
Another sob threatened to break out. Dominic swallowed it back like the rest, but he couldn't hold back the tears any more.
