Optimism
Jal can never know.
That was his first thought when they told him. But then he reassessed. At this point it felt like it was physically impossible for him to keep anything from her. That's what he loves about Jal.
It'll get better.
Because, if nothing else, Chris was optimistic. It was in his nature. If he didn't learn to look on the bright side, his life would spiral downwards until he hit the ground with a thump and didn't get back up again.
So he didn't allow it to get to him.
At least, not when anyone was watching.
