Part 1

It was the year 2177. Exactly 100 years after the Nuclear Holocaust. People were forced into these "Vaults." The vaults were meant to have 1000 people each. There were 227 vaults total. Not enough to hold everyone in America from China's nuclear weaponry.

Martynn lived in Vault 156 his whole life. He knew the whole way around the tiny complex. He was 17. He was in completely fit shape, and had vitamins and minerals every day. Martynn only ate treats once every 2 months.

Martynn lived in the complex with 3 other reserved families. These families are his, the Barse's, the Wardes, and the Flanagans who emigrated here from Canada just before the War.

His best friend was Hayden Warde, who was the exact same age as him, but was born 5 days after Martynn. He was an only child, just like Martynn. Another person who lived right next door to him was Leo Barse. He was a scientist who liked to experiment with different combinations of chemistry. He was 14. He had a 7-year-old sister who was very, very annoying.

The Flanagans, on the other hand, were a very calm family with a 3-year-old baby. The baby's name was Ryan. He had had his last birthday 4 days ago in the Cafeteria.

Today was Martynn's birthday. He turned 17 today only just 4 hours ago at 12:00 AM. When boys turn 17 in Vault 156; they have to go outside for 1 month in the Washington State Wasteland. When they do get back, and survive, that is, they are officially a Man.

Now, Martynn was packing up to go outside of the Vault. His parents were wishing him good luck out there. He promised Hayden that he would meet him when he came out. His parents and everyone else led him to the hallway straight toward the great steel door of Vault 156. His parents handed him a pocketknife and some matches. They said goodbye.

The steel door opened into the great cave leading outside of Vault 156.
