Saving one live, losing another

I love my sons, no matter what. That's why I told them that they are not allowed to follow me to work. I never wanted them to see the experiments I do on the monsters who died not long before I started the experiments.

One night I came home late. My oldest son was still awake.

"Dad, where were you? Did you work long again?", he asked. I smiled slightly at him. He was pretty smart for his age.

"Yes Sans. But don't worry. I will always find a way to be with you two.", I hugged him.

"Papyrus is already asleep.", Sans said. I already considered this, because Papyrus is still a baby.

"I already thought so. Of to bed with you too now.", I replied. Sans nodded and I gave him a good night kiss on his fore head.

"Good night, dad", Sans smiled and walked off to his room.

"Good night, son.", I smiled back. Still I was worried. What if Sans and Papyrus follow me one day. The king gave me the task to build something that he calls 'The Core'. I'll worry about that tomorrow.

I woke up early, like always. I stood up and woke up my sons.

"Wake up, Sans. It's time for breakfast.", I shook him gently.

"5 more minutes.", he mumbled what made me chuckle. I used levitation to get him out of bed.

"Just because it's weekend doesn't mean you can be lazy. You have to train, Sans.", I grinned. Sans was slightly annoyed. I put him down.

"I know. But can't you take us with you this time?", Sans asked excided. I shook my head. I didn't want them to think of me as a bad person.

"I can't. It'll be too dangerous for the two of you.", I simply replied.

Sans asked me every day for 5 years if the two of them could come along with me to work and every day I said no.

One day, I just finished 'The Core' with my assistant Dr. Alphys when I heard Papyrus laugh.

"What was that, Dr. Gaster?", Alphys wanted to know.

"One of my sons. I told them to stay home.", I was a bit angry at Sans. I searched the whole Lab for them.

"There you are Sans. Where is Papyrus?", I asked my son in an angry tone. Sans just shrugged and I got a bad feeling. I ran with Sans in my arms to the hole in 'The Core'. Papyrus was there and he was about to fall in there.

"PAPYRUS NO!", I yelled and teleported to him. I threw him to Sans, lost my balance and fell in the 'Core'.

I now was nonexistent anymore. But I watched my sons grow up and making friends. Even though they didn't know I was watching them I had the feeling, that Sans knew I was there.

I am so proud of you two and I miss you two very much.
