Prologue:

Rumplestiltskin had not wanted to go. He had not wanted to go anywhere. Because today was Bae's birthday, and he was in no mood to make deals. But the woman had been screeching in his head all day and it was only the thought of Bae's horrified face that stopped him from just appearing to her and ripping out her heart.

So, to shut her up, he went to make a deal with her.

His boots crushed the small grains of sand that lay beneath him as he almost floated along the beach, the moonlight highlighting every single shining scale that patterned his green skin. His golden eyes glimmered eerily as he caught sight of the woman just a while away from him, her long black hair blowing in the wind and surrounding her in a protective circle. A bundle was in her arms, and as he neared her he realized that, tucked away in the many white cloths was a small baby.

He reached the baby's mother, eyes narrowed suspiciously as he peered down at the baby girl. She had small tufts of ebony hair, and her golden eyes were wide with innocent curiosity. She gurgled, her pale lips parting and her moon white skin glowing in the light. Rumplestiltskin raised his eyes to meet the mother's and she stared back in fear.

And he knew.

As soon as he looked at her he knew she hated this child. With a loathing which power was so strong it almost matched the strength of his magic. He did not know why but he knew the mother hated her child with a burning passion. And in her eyes he saw only Milah. And in the baby's eyes he saw only Bae. Without hesitation he reached out his arms.

The woman, lips trembling, held out the baby in her shaking arms and dropped the young girl into his. Her eyes did not leave her child's, filled with disgust and the urge to rid of her. Rumplestiltskin knew she would kill her child if that would mean she could be away from them. Anger filled him. He growled in disgust, and the woman jumped and turned to run away. Rumplestiltskin reached forward, balancing the child in one arm, and his hand entered her back. When it left her heart was thumping in his hand. It was black and shrivelled.

The woman turned to stare at him in awe and horror. And then she dropped to the floor, dead. Rumplestiltskin dropped the dust of her heart on top of her, and it blanketed her in an ash coloured cloud. He gazed down at the baby in his arms, and then looked up, thoughts of Bae plaguing his mind. He disappeared into a pool of purple smoke, which snaked outwards, the only sign he had ever been there - besides maybe the woman dead on the floor.
