People's fates are simplified by their names. ~Elias Canetti
Caroline.
It is late at night, almost 11 o'clock. It is dark and soon it will start to rain. She is alone and she is running fast. She doesn't want back home, never again. She's telling herself that she isn't afraid. But it is a lie. She feels lonely.
The girl carries a bag pack, with her most precious belongings in it. Her ballet slippers, her favourite book, some chocolate bars.
She is heading to her grandparent's house. She has decided to live there now. Because she doesn't want to see her parents ever again.
They are not her parents. She is not their daughter, not really.
"I liked the first Caroline better."
Robert made a joke. Robert, her brother, who had a bad day and didn't mean to say it. Who had kept this secret from her for so many years, who didn't want to hurt his little sister. And she hates him like she hates their parents.
Her mother's pale green eyes lost every spark, they became dull and lifeless. But the look in her father's eyes was much worse. Maybe because they were blue, just like her eyes.
She could see the truth in them. He really believed what Robert said. Because he doesn't like her, doesn't love her. He wants a daughter he cannot have. He wants Caroline and not her.
She screamed. She cried. Tears rolled down her eyes. She was gone within an hour.
She is crying again. And she is running. Running away from her parents, her siblings and her home. Running away from her name and a sister she has never met.
She isn't Caroline anymore. She never wants to be again. She is not that girl. She is… She is Merit. This is her fate.
Merit.
