Drabble: Protected Dreams

Author: Mel (MelodiousRhapsody)

Length: 200+

Summary: It's the night before the duel with Miraz and Peter can't sleep.

It's the night before, and Peter can't sleep. He knows he should, to get some rest before the big game so to speak; but for some reason, something is keeping him from the peaceful dreams he should be having now. He puzzles over it, frowns over it, but still can't figure out what exactly is bothering him.

Throwing on a robe – for the nights are cold, he steps out of his tent and heads for the spot near the river where he goes to clear his head. Edmund calls it his thinking spot. Edmund. That's when he's struck with a thought: What will happen if I'm killed in Narnia? Would he still be alive in the other would? Would he see Susan, Lucy, Edmund again? See Caspian again? The young prince – no, king-to-be – was growing on him. He would make a good king. What would happen if he failed? A chill runs down his spine and he trembles lightly at the thought.

Reaching his 'thinking spot', he sits down, uncaring if the robe got muddied and torn, still deep in thought. In fact, he's so deep in his thoughts he does not notice the other two sets of footsteps that follow closely behind him. Does not notice when thy come to either side of him. He starts when they wrap arms around him, one set so pale and so fair, the other dark and strong. Caspian pulls Peter in to lean against his chest, Edmund crowding him in on the other side, and for once Peter feels safe, caged in and protected.

It's then that he closes his eyes and dozes off.
