So...I'm not sure this makes any sense at all. I wrote it in, like, 10 minutes and from the perspective of a 3-year-old (I hope). It's something I've been thinking about for a while, thought. What if the Swans gave Emma up, not because they were having another baby, but because the Apprentice interfered? What if he was instrumental in setting her on the path toward her destiny? These are the kinds of questions that keep me up at night. :) Anywho, I finally decided to write it out, mostly to free up some space in my brain. I'm not sure how I even feel about this one but hopefully you guys like it.

Her Best Chance

Tears fell down Emma Swan's cheeks as she peeked out the car window and hugged her blanket close to her chest. She watched the three grown-ups on the porch and her tummy started to hurt again. Two days ago she'd been happy and loved, now all she felt was confusion and hurt. Everyone kept telling her this was her best chance but she had no idea what that meant. All she knew was she was being sent away. What had she done that was so wrong? She'd always tried to be a good girl but sometimes it was hard. Maybe it was the pitcher she broke last week. But her mommy had told her it was okay. No, not her mommy. Not any more. That thought brought fresh tears to Emma's eyes. She didn't have a mommy and daddy any more and it all started when that strange man came to talk to her parents. She'd known it was wrong but she'd spied on them when they were talking a couple of days ago. He told them to send her away and they agreed. Didn't they love her any more? Emma wiped her tears on her blanket as the front car door opened, refusing to look at the strange man who was taking her away from everything she'd ever known.

"I know you are sad, Emma, but this is truly your best chance. This is your destiny."

Emma finally looked up at him, studying his features. He had friendly eyes and reminded her a little of Santa Claus. She didn't understand how, but she knew he was telling the truth and that caused a brand new hurt. Without speaking, she buried her face in the blanket. Maybe her destiny was to be unwanted and unloved.

The End
