Severus Snape is aware of the lack of smiles that has ever faceted in his expression. Very little reasons can be attributed; his life was not exactly with roses or happy memories. It was quite the opposite in fact. He could not even remember when he last put that gesture, even when consciousness of thought first entered his childhood, off-putting thoughts and experiences were already common.

Even things that he enjoyed doing the most were no more than helpful. While leaving potion-making and teaching was a little far from thought right now, even at the impending danger of morphing into something was always at a high probability due to the dunderheads he'd been teaching, he rather die than admit it to himself.

Save for very few students, whom he can say, that is worth devoting his entire time of teaching, it hardly held him any impulse to smile even when it was relatively evident that they were doing well. It will save him some of his pride just to keep it to himself that falling in favor for a particular student was not something that he had ever felt before.

Although it was unintended, he was no longer contented with the thought of just being a teacher for that matter. Stepping out of the boundaries was not only a very inauspicious choice, it was also greatly discouraged. The notion of being in a situation that was beyond his better judgment was maddening. He despise lack of control, it gives him the sensation of weakness.

Did he also chose that in this moment, while talking to her and pointing out the flaws in her report, his heart could not stop thumping wildly? Even at the point when he was observing the indignation and frustration that the girl was giving, hiding a quirk of the side of his lips was getting harder. He was not giving the girl the benefit of seeing this uncommon display of emotion.

"But professor…"

He retaliated back. "Are you accusing me of incapability of understanding what I teach?"

"No, of course not…"

"Then I should not waste my time in this pointless discussion. If you continue to bother me with your dim-witted explanations, I'll force you out of my office."

She did not say anything after that. Looking dejected, she packed up her things that were on the chair beside the desk.

Severus Snape looked away from her and turned his attention to the report in hand. It was plainly good, more than what he expected. It was also unclear to him why did he put so many markings. This was not a very compromising issue, when he knows it was clearly something else what had pushed him to do. Getting to talk to her was making him resort to ridiculous plans. He tore away from his thoughts when he heard the door of his office being bolted open. As she was taking her leave, she looked at him and smiled.

"It was very interesting to talk with you. I wish I could always do this."

The door closed, leaving him stunned.

He smiled.
