Teenchester. Sam is 12. Dean is 16. John has been gone longer than he should have been and the food money ran out.
Dean hunkered behind some bushes and peered through the leaves, his breath still coming in gasps.
"Holy crap!" he whispered. "Talk about a narrow escape."
Sam was dripping sweat. "I thought we were goners."
"That old dude meant business!" Dean glanced at his brother. "You're bleeding."
"It's just a scratch."
"That's more than a scratch."
"It was worth it." Sam opened the bag he held clutched in his hands to reveal their bounty: sodas, snack cakes, and two packs of bologna.
Dean grinned. "This should do until Dad gets back."
"If he comes back."
"He'll be back, Sammy. I promise."
