It cost two bucks at Goodwill, a total bargain. It didn't need to actually work—Dean didn't want it for music anyway.

Battery-operated, portable, basic circuitry—just needed the "record" function for input, plus rewiring and a display.

And time with a soldering iron and spare parts…

Three months he hauled it around, until they visited Dad's electrician friend in Richmond. Dean tinkered in the garage for days—nothing, uh-oh, almost—before braving a trial run at the cemetery.

Paydirt on the Latham and Montgomery tombs, silence on the gravestones and the rest.
