Lily looked up from her romance novel.

"Hey Lily, what's up?" Asked James. He towered over her, and despite his unruly charcoal black hair, he was quite handsome. Thin, black eyebrows surrounded his watery blue eyes. His strong shoulders held up two, well-built arms. Lily could see how Quidditch helped with James's fitness.

"Not much, just reading," replied Lily. As James looked down on her, he couldn't help smiling. He stared into her soft, green eyes, her face framed with long, auburn curls. Although Lily was thin, she was very strong, and could take down, any attacker easily. Her looks made her very popular.

"What are you reading?" James asked. Although very outgoing, there was no doubt Lily was studious. She was the top in all of her classes. Also in their seventh year, James and Lily were Head Boy and Girl of Gryffindor.

"Oh, just some light reading," Lily, replied eying the book James was carrying. "Whatcha got there?"

"Oh, just a book Sirius lent me, on stags." James replied. "They are very interesting animals."

"Oh okay." Lily replied, and then went back to reading.

Another failed attempt to ask her out, James thought, grimacing as he walked away.

"Oh by the way, James. Do you want to get a few Butterbeers together at the Three Broomsticks tomorrow? Asked Lily, hoping with all her heart he would say yes.

"Yes!" James said, almost automatically. "That would be great!"

"Okay, see you later," Lily replied, then returned to her book. It looked like she was reading, but she was actually rejoicing. Finally, I asked. And he said yes! Lily thought.

Meanwhile, James walked back to his group with a big smile plastered on his face. Upon getting there, Padfoot, Sirius Black, asked immediately, "What did you do?"

"I got a date with Lily tomorrow!" James blurted out.

"You finally asked her?" asked Moony, Remus Lupin asked, not looking up from his Arithmetic book.

"Not really, she asked me." James smiled sheepishly, grinning.

"Oh well. It's all over school you and Lily are 'made for each other.' "

"Man, I can't wait!"

The next day, Lily and James met up at the Three Broomsticks.

"Hi," Lily said sheepishly.

"Hey," James replied, apparently very taken by his shoes. "How 'bout you find a table, and I'll get the butterbeers?"

"Sure," Lily smiled and went to go look for a table.

After paying for the butterbeers, James turned around to see his mortal enemy, Lucius Malfoy, sitting across from Lily. From the look on Lily's face, it seemed he had sat down unasked.

"James!" Lily exclaimed as he walked up. She had a relieved look on her face.

"Lucius, could you leave now so James can sit down?"

"No, I don't really feel like getting up. Hey James, how about leaving me and the miss alone?" Lucius sneered at James.

"Leave now, Malfoy, or your nose will never look the same again." James said through clenched teeth.

"I'm leaving, I'm leaving," Malfoy jumped up. "Gosh."

"Sorry about that," James apologized.

"It's okay, it wasn't your fault," Lily replied.
