Garden

Ms. Keane organizes the mounds of red dirt she digs up in her garden into three piles before her prized mango and cherry trees. Her plastic gloves protect her painted nails and pale skin from stain and her long sleeves and wide-brimmed thatch hat that save her from the summer sun as she sits in her backyard garden. She swipes the beads of sweat forming on her dark brow and stray strands of her hair from her face in the same movement as she hums.

Once content, she removes a small black pot from the stack at her hip and hurls a chunk of the dirt inside, hoping that her students will enjoy these gifts as much as she loves her garden.
