I Believe In Nothing

Caroline jumps up in her chair.

"What happened?", she asks, concern filling her voice.

In a flash, Stefan takes a seat next to her. He puts his head in between his hands and he lets out a sigh, composing himself. Slowly, she scoots closer to him, putting a reassuring arm on his thigh.

"He wants a war."

She blinks repeatedly, repeating the sentance over and over again in her head to make sure she heard him correctly. After a moment, she straightens up.

"Then we'll give him one."

They wait for the fight in the woods, the only light being the fire Bonnie summoned moments ago, and Caroline tries to reassure herself that everything will be okay. She tries to reassure herself that they will win again and tries to make herself believe that there's no such thing as bad luck and that, if there is, then it definitely isn't at their side.

She looks behind her, as Bonnie's fire grows bigger and wider and she uses all her strength to stop her body from shaking. She blinks, getting the pictures of either Stefan or Damon or - God forbid - Bonnie getting thrown in the fire instead of the sick motherfucker.

There is no such thing as bad luck.

(They get Katherine's signal, and so it begins.)

She takes her place in between Damon and Stefan, Katherine joining with a flash. Bonnie nods silently at her, turning to go further into the woods, to meet Jeremy and Elena. Dylan can't know they're all here. Not yet.

"What if we die?", she asks, her voice a whisper. She knows it's a stupid question, but it left her mouth before she could even think about it. Damon ignores it, but she knows he heard her, as his fists clench. She's too far away to see Katherine's reaction, but next to her, Stefan shrugs.

"Then I guess we're dead."

(As if they're not dead already.)

Dylan pins her up against the tree.

"Any last words, Barbie?"

She sends him a glare, already content with her destiny, and a second later she feels Dylan's weight lifted off her shoulders. Stefan tosses the vampire to Damon, who pins him to the ground as Katherine puts a stake through his thigh.

"No one calls her 'Barbie' but me, got it?", Damon says before leaving to take the vampire to Bonnie. He smiles at the thought of the motherfucker burning.

"You okay?", Stefan asks her and she nods lightly, falling to the ground and leaning on the tall tree. She lets out an unnecessary sigh.

"Yeah.. Don't worry."

He lifts her up slowly, and she leans into his shoulder.

She wishes she could cry.

She feels someone watching her.

"I know it's you, Stefan."

He lets himself be seen, "What's wrong, Caroline?"

She shakes her head, "Nothing, I told yo-"

"I haven't seen you in a week, Caroline.", he cuts her off, "Not since the fight."

"It's just..", she starts, taking a seat, "It all came back to me, you know? My dad, my mom.. Everyone. And you don't understand. You can't. Because you're perfectly okay with being.. this, but I'm not. I just want to cry, Stefan. I want to curl up into a ball and cry in the darkest corner of my room. But I can't because I'm a fucking vampire and vampires can't fucking cry."

He comes closer to her, "We can help, Caroline. You just have to trust us."

"Who? Katherine the bitch or Damon the bloodsucker?"

"Me."

She looks up at him and for the first time in a long time she feels like smiling.

"Okay."

He nods.

"Okay."
