Summary: I know you, inside and out. Written for the LJ Community "Fanfic Bake-off" prompt: Tangle

On the outskirts, I watch my 'family', nodding and smiling on cue. They never see the stage-hand feeding lines, nor thin plastic curtain that separates them from the monster that is Dexter.

But her? She and I are entwined by death. A bond as thick as blood.

"You and I are kindred spirits, Mona."

Her eyes glare daggers at me. Like she doesn't really believe that I'll harm her. I will. There's no doubt in my mind. There's doubt in hers, though.

"You and I are like lovers."

Mona narrows her eyes. Does she think I'll rape her? Such a thing is beneath even my perversions.

I stroke my blade across her cheek, not hard enough to cut – not yet.

"You, like me, flirt with death. How many has it been?" I gesture toward the display I've carefully crafted just for her. "I lost count at fifteen, but then again, you didn't start the hunt here in Miami. No," I look into her eyes and I think she's beginning to get it. "You started years ago, didn't you?"

Mona blinks, her brow furrowed in confusion.

I take out her gag. Noise doesn't matter here, so deep in the forest.

If a woman dies in the forest, does anyone hear her scream?

"You son of a whore! Just wait until my husband gets his hands on you..."

I smile and hold up an picture of her dead husband. Just last night. What a beautiful death!

Mona's eyes widen in realization. Then fear.

"Sticks and stones, Mona."

Finally, she understands. Finally, I take my trophy.

"Scream for me," I lean in and whisper, hoping she'll give in to my newest craving.

She's a soprano.

My knife cuts deeply and the crescendo is long.
