"Do you really think this is a good idea?" Kate asked a sceptical look on her face.
"Maybe, maybe not ... but it's the only plan we've got. I ain't hangin' around here any more, Kate. I'm gettin' off this damn rock if it's the last thing I do. So I'm gonna go and steal me a sub. You're either with me, or you're not."
Kate was silent, and followed the southerner towards the beach front, closely followed by Claire, Sun, Frank and Hugo. She frowned as her feet sunk into the sand and Hydra Island met her eyes from across the ocean.
"I thought you said there was two out-riggers?"
"There was ..." Sawyer replied slowly. Where could that have gone?
"Dude ... are we all gonna fit in that thing?"
"Sure ... we'll just ..." Sawyer cleared his throat as he approached the touchy subject, "even out our weight ... It'll be fine."
They climbed in one by one and were soon paddling their way across the blue sea. Sawyer kept his eyes fixed towards the beach ahead of him. Sun's voice caught his attention.
"Look!" She sounded surprised, and they each turned to see where she was pointing. The other outrigger was being sailed, just to their left and slightly in front. Sawyer frowned, squinting, and craning his neck to attempt to get a better look at the people in it.
Her blonde hair was the first thing he saw.
"Son of a bitch," he breathed.
"What?" Kate demanded. "Sawyer? Who is it?"
"Juliet ..." his voice was almost inaudible. He cleared his throat, and shouted after the woman who had died in his arms two weeks previously. "JULIET!" He called, and started paddling towards the outrigger. "Everyone paddle this way! Juliet's on that boat!"
"Juliet's dead! James, what the hell are you talking about?!" Kate shouted.
"She can't hear me ... JULIET!" He called, yet to no avail. He turned back to look at Kate, who was looking at him with slight fear in her green eyes. "I gotta get her attention Kate ..." he said, pulling the gun from his pants and aiming in the water.
"Dude I don't think you should be doing that ..."
He ignored Hurley. He had to get her attention. Somehow ... anyhow. He had no clue as to what he would say to her if he actually managed to change what had happened, and Daniels words fleeted through his mind briefly "you can't change the past, James!"
She was worth trying though, and he shot once more.
"TURN BACK!" Kate yelled. Water splashed everywhere as bullets came flying towards them, he ducked slightly, but never took his eyes away from her. The sun was bright. She couldn't see him, he was sure.
"JULIET!" He called one final time, as one final shot rang out through the air and James noticed the boat disappearing before his eyes before he noticed the pain.
The pain was just like his blonde. It took his breath away, and made him aware of every nerve in his body. People were frantic, and yet the voices surrounding him were not the thing he focussed on. He thought about her ... the way she sighed whenever she reached the end of a book, the way she laughed whenever he took the piss out of Phil, the way she hummed when she cleaned the windows; the tiny details that came to his mind as naturally as breathing did.
The pain pulsing throughout his body was familiar ... not familiar because getting shot seemed like a certainty for him, familiar because he had felt it the second she died in his arms. He was dying, and despite this, he felt a small smile spread across his face.
It was just damn near poetic Juliet would be the one to kill him.
Just a short one shot of something that came to my head Based on promotional photos for 6x13! I hope it made sense!
