Waterbender's Moon

There were as many possibilities as there are ways to command water (that is: Infinite). When Katara tilts her face up to the stars, she realizes that it is only for Sokka that the doors have closed, and guilt and excitement pour through her.

-

Katara never touched Yue when she was alive, and she's not sure if she regrets it. On the one hand, it carves her more surreal in Katara's eyes - on the other, having touched her would make her feel better about being close to her now. If she'd claimed her just a tiny bit in life then perhaps she could meet Sokka's eyes when she waterbends (or when the moon is high, or when he mentions Yue - which is rare, still).

Now, years later, Katara isn't sure she ever had a connection with Yue before she died. She tries not to linger on how uncomfortable the idea makes her. She only wants what's best (and who's to say what the best is for her, now, anyway?).

-

The arch of her wall is smooth, devoid of windows, but she clutches the fur under her, silently moaning a prayer.

She quietly fixes the cracks racing up the wall.

-

Katara has a dream. In it, Yue and her encircle each other (yin and yang), and when she wakes, she worries that it is an ill-omen, ignoring the calm love filling her chest when she first wakes.

-

When Katara mentions Sokka, Yue looks away, so she changes the conversation, turning it to the monk who brought her here and the prince hunting them and the wonders in-between.

(Halfway through she begins to suspect that Yue's heard much grander versions of these tales, but her smile is endearing and she's an attentive listener.)

-

Yue bows to her, which is peculiar. No one bows to Katara. "It is an honor to meet the last waterbender of our sister tribe," she says, voice gentle, but when she looks up the illusion that she is separate from her is broken by the incredulity and heartbreak in her face. "Is it true? Are you really the last?"

-

"Yeah, she is."

Looking back, Katara catches a glimpse of white, but in the water there is the reflection of a spire of ice and she turns away.
