The Art of Asking Girls Out

"Honey, do you like Ron's sister?" Mrs. Potter interrupted Harry's silent eating. Harry rolled his eyes at his mother and resumed eating.

"Mum," he whined jokingly through a spoonful of oatmeal, "Stay out of my love life!"

"Well, I'm sorry that I want my charming son," here she grimaced at the lack of table manners that her teenage son was currently exhibiting, "To be happy and find a wife." Mrs. Potter ran her hand through Harry's hair and readjusted his crooked glasses.

"Fine, I like her. But she's Ron's sister. He would kill me," Harry admitted, dropping his spoon back down into his bowl. He couldn't keep things from his mum.

"I think she likes you, as well," Lily Potter said with a wink.

"Mum!" Mrs. Potter stood up to wash a few dishes and looked at her son with an incredulous expression.

"I haven't done anything," she said, staring down at her hands and trying to contain her mischievous laugh.

"You know, you act like Dad's the one who's mischievous, but you're just as bad! Stop meddling!" he got up and started helping his mum with drying dishes.

"What can I say? Your father made me a rebel," she said with a teasing wink at her son.

"Funny, Dad says that you were always a bit of a rebel," Harry grinned. Mrs. Potter rolled her eyes and threw a soapy sponge at him and he caught it with his seeker skills.

"So, are you going to ask Ginny out?" Lily teased her son.

He sighed and shrugged, continuing to dry in silence for a minute. "I dunno, I mean, I need to ask Ron first, for permission. But yeah, I think I might…"

Lily Potter beamed and leaned over to kiss her son on the cheek. "You have to give love a chance, sweetie. If I hadn't, well, you wouldn't exist," she winked again at her son. Harry pretended to gag at the implications of her words and walked away from the kitchen.

As Lily finished up drying dishes, she heard her son barge into her husband's office and ask, "Dad, do you have any advice for asking out a girl?"

"Well," he pretended to think about it, "'Let's go out,' worked for me." Lily laughed from the kitchen.

"James Potter, don't be feeding our son lies!"
