Written for the second round of the Anything You Want To Write competition. I was given Charlie Weasley and the prompt "creature." I own nothing. Please review:)
Charlie walked into his son's room and watched him sleep. Contorted into a seemingly impossible position, he slept clutching a stuffed green dragon. An almost identical, even smaller dragon was on the nightstand next to him. That dragon was a model, enchanted to fly around and breathe harmless flames. It was curled up, issuing slight wisps of steam as it snored. The stuffed dragon was new, for David's recently bought and given for his birthday, but the little model was very old. The sight of it, and his son's reaction to the gifts, reminded Charlie of another little boy obsessed with dragons. . .
. . .
When he turned six, Arthur had given his second son the tiny model dragon. Charlie had chased it around, beaming and shrieking with laughter, from the instant he opened the gift to the tearful moment his mother forced him to go to bed. He had been entranced by the little dragon, amazed by what, as he was told, dragons really looked like. He had asked his dad a constant stream of questions as his ran by, interrogating him about dragons, Care of Magical Creatures, and Hogwarts. He told now one else, but that day he decided that when he went to Hogwarts, he would learn everything he could about dragons and other magical creatures, and he would grow up to work with dragons. As he grew older, he played with his little dragon less and less, but every year it accompanied him to school in the bottommost corner of his trunk. Even more secret than the existence of his little dragon was his name—"Keder," after his own first failed attempt at the word "creature" at six years old. And though as a teenager, he pursued other interests and found other things he liked, his vow to himself as a little boy was always in the back of his mind. And so when he got the offer to leave school after sixth year to train at a dragon reserve, he jumped at the chance. Though he moved closer to home after the war, his passion for the creatures never left. And now that he had a son, he was passing his beloved Keder on to him, to share his love for dragons with his son. And even if he decided interests lay elsewhere, Charlie didn't mind. As David grew older, Charlie hoped to teach him the joy of a job one truly loves, a passion for anything, promises to yourself, and determination. Whether he followed in his footsteps or not, Charlie was happy with the joy on his son's face at receiving the legendary dragon, and his subsequent barrage of questions not unlike six year old Charlie's. After a war that decimated almost everything he held dear, this day had finally made him realize the power of love. He had a loving wife, an amazing son, and hope for the future. Instead of accompanying his son to war, Keder would be a reminder of lessons learned and the power to follow his dreams.
I honestly don't know who Charlie's wife might be. Use your imagination. I believe he never marries in canon, but when this idea popped into my head I just had to use it.
