It was the first thing he'd stolen that day. A peppermint candy. It wasn't his fault really. Hugo had them out in front of everyone and Donny had already finished his own. Besides, he could taste the stink on his breath. So he grabbed one. Hugo hadn't minded anyway, just sat silently and rolled his eyes as always. Donny chuckled and thanked the man. Hugo nodded. It wasn't a big deal. It wasn't his fault really. But still, it was.
The wrist watch was the second thing Donny stole that day. It belonged to Hugo's father who had, in turn, given it to his eldest child. He hadn't stolen it really, but he'd broken it. It wasn't his fault. The two men were messing around, wrestling. Donny hitched his foot behind Hugo's knee and the two tumbled to the ground. Hugo's wrist collided with a stubborn rock, the wrist watch broke, and Donny had never seen Hugo go so white. He immediately rolled off the other man, inspecting the damage and looking to fix it, but it was done. The face of the watch had cracked clean in half, revealing the inner clockwork. It wasn't his fault really. Hugo should have known better, should have taken the damn thing off before they started roughhousing. It wasn't his fault. But still, it was.
The third thing was something Donny never expected himself to want. He'd approached Hugo later that day, finally getting him alone for a minute. He meant to apologize again about the watch, wouldn't let himself feel better no matter how many times Hugo insisted "It's okay Donny. It's fine. It wasn't your fault." Because it kind of was, really. But this time, he didn't think Hugo would say it. His eyes looked kind of red. Donny knew it was his fault, and when he broke something, he had to at least try to fix it. He extended his arms, tentatively, to the older man. He expected a punch square in the jaw, but Hugo walked into his embrace instead, leaning his head on the more muscular man's shoulder and sighing tiredly. Donny tensed awkwardly for a moment, causing Hugo to pull back, look up. Donny smiled and said it again. "I'm so sorry Hugo." This time, the blonde only nodded. Looked down at the ground. Shrugged. "It was only a watch." And damn if he didn't sound so put out.
The third thing Donny stole was a kiss. Half because he didn't know what else to do and half because…because…well… It wasn't really his fault. Hugo's eyes were just so blue in the fading light. His lips looked really soft too. And he didn't have to accept Donny's hug in the first place. So it wasn't his fault really.
But still, it was.
