"…you have no idea, how much it hurts…"
Jack sat at the head of the dinner table; over looking the amount of food, his wife Lureen, and son Bobby. He loved them yes, but deep down, locked away, Jack had a secret. A secret that grew every passing day; for you see, he loved one other, probably more then anyone could love…a, man. No! He wasn't just a man…he was Jack's best friend, his love…he was, Ennis…Ennis Dal Mah.
It all began on the top of Broke back Mountain one unusual cool night; Jack and Ennis were only 19 back then, they had recently developed a friendship after months of guarding sheep. But tonight…their friendship had changed, a bond that had given birth to something strong. Something they both had no control over. Sure enough, within a tent, hidden by forests of tree ferns and shrubs; two bodies, lying side by side, glistening with a cool sheet of sweat, their breathing was hoarse and ridged, he moved his hand over the man before him, pulling him closer for one kiss…closer…closer…their lips almost touching….he could feel the other's hot breath, the scent of cheap whiskey and cigarettes…so close…their lips…
"Jack! Honey, wake up…" – woke with a startle, he could feel the sweat all over him. Damn! It was only a dream he thought, slowly rising from the bed and heading the unsuit bathroom.
"What time is it?"
"About 9:30; you're late for work!"
"I'm late…? I didn't see you getting up in a hurry!"
"Yes, but I'm looking after Bobby today, he's feeling ill…" - a dull silence and come over the room, and with a question that made Lureen quiver just thinking about –
"Ah, Jack..." she paused, watching her husband change our of his sleep wear and into some work overalls. "…who is Ennis…?"
"What!" he suddenly snapped, feeling I'll himself
"Ennis…you were mumbling his name, before I woke you-"
"oh well, he…Ennis was…he was…my, err…fishing buddy, that's all…"
"Hmmm" she replied, before her husband left the room, glaring down at her wedding ring; "It sure didn't sound like you were fishing Jack…"
That was to close…I cant believe I've been dreaming, and about you Ennis…I…I have to see you Jack thought as he strolled down the side walk, heading into the Texas Post Office…
