The truck shakes across the gravel road. The smell of the countryside seems to work its way into my memories. Going many years ago. I turn the truck into the long driveway, the trees start to break way to reveal the grain mills and the big, white, two-story house. I pull the truck near the porch and turn it off. I sat in the vehicle just looking at the scenery. Taking in the smells from the open window.
I hop out and walk onto the front porch. I run my hand on the railing. "It's been so long," I whisper to myself. I look to the tree with the swing, the swing itself swaying in the breeze.
I enter the unlocked door and into the living room. The rickety staircase going upstairs just to the left. I explore the first floor, the kitchen with the vintage stove, the old couch in the living room, even to the bathrooms. Taking it all in, the memories flooding my mind.
I look up the staircase. The wallpaper rotting off the walls. I ascend the staircase and come to the four doors I know so well. Ma and Pa's room, Mary's room, the bathroom, and my old room. I go into the closest door, Mary's room.
I walk through the room, looking at all the posters my sister put on the walls. I look at her dresser to see a picture frame on top. I pick it up and blow off the dust.
The picture in the frame was a family portrait featuring all of us standing in front of the house. Written on the picture is my Mary's handwriting. "June 2nd, 2015" It reads. I start to tear up and leave the room. I enter the hallway and stumble into another room. Wiping my tears away I realize where I am. Ma and Pa's room.
I look around the room. The pictures on the walls and tables were so dusty you couldn't see the pictures hidden beneath them. My mind filled with memories and sorrow I finally hear the growl.
I quickly look at the closet where it's coming from and pull my revolver out. I aim at the closet door as it slowly opens.
"M-m-ma.?" I choke out. One of her eye's were hanging out from it's socket and skin was either peeling off or gone. She's frail and skinny from lack of flesh. She hungrily stumbles towards me. "M-ma? What happened to you?"
I watch helplessly as she falls over and starts clawing my leg. "Ma!" I yell as I kick her off. I start to back off with tears in my eyes. "Ma! S-stay away!" I point my revolver at her just before I trip over a book that's on the ground. The revolver get's flung from my hand, the ammo flying out and landing everywhere. I crawl back to the wall sobbing, always keeping an eye on Ma.
My back hits the wall. Nowhere else to go. I look right and see the revolver. I start to grab it when Ma flings herself on top of me, trying with all her force to claw my face. I struggle with her for a good while until I hesitantly push her to the side and reach for the revolver. My hand touches it and I grab it quickly just as she flings herself back on me. I aim and fire.
Click
It's out of ammo. I fire three more times. Nothing. My arm starts to get weak and her hands get closer to my skull. I fire one more time. Blood goes everywhere and she stops moving. I push her off me and get up slowly. I go back to the truck without looking back.
