O'Neill was an ROTC student who graduated from Minnesota State University and went active duty. He began his career as a combat fighter pilot and later auditioned for SOCOM. He may or may not have taken part in several operations that (according to the government) did not happen in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East in addition to Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, and Kosovo. His ability to do his job and keep his mouth shut about it made him the first choice to lead a team through the gate. He is an avid amateur astronomer and hates scientists-or at least most of them. He is a qualified expert at all Nato and Warsaw Pact small arms. He is also qualified in most NATO Pact fixed wing aircraft, as well as most rotary wing aircraft, and is a test pilot for the X-30 "Snake-Buster I".
Appearances can be deceiving. One does not become a colonel in the USAF by being patronizing, pretentious, cocky, ignorant and cynical-among other nasty traits. In contrast to all appearances otherwise, neither did O'Neill.
It just seemed appropriate. His birthplace comes from gateworld , and the MOS come from the actual USAF Website.
