Knives' cold stare met that of his brother. They both waited for the other to make a move.

Memories ran through Vash's head... Memories of Rem. Then those of her death, and the deaths of countless others. Suddenly Knives could feel the icy tip to the barrel of his brother's gun against his neck.

"You're dead, Knives!" Vash worked hard to keep his rage under control. The trigger itched against his finger.

The unfeeling smirk of his brother, however, never changed.

"You won't kill me. You can't. Your precious Rem told you not to." All at once, Knives kicked Vash in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Vash's gun went flipping through the air. Knives gracefully caught it. "Coward! You're too afraid to challenge what you think you know! That's your weakness! You rely too much on the teachings of a human. Rem was a fool!"

Instantly he felt one of Vash's boot knives pierce his left thigh.

"I'm sorry, brother." He stood up and picked up the weapon that Knives had dropped. "But you're the coward! You're too afraid to admit that you were wrong. You think you're superior, but even they can see that killing in the name of life is stupid. You massacre innocent people in the name of peace. Don't you remember the our childhood?"

"That was a long time ago, Vash." "Yes it was, Millions Sevarem." Vash could see his brother getting angrier by the second. Knives cringed as he pulled the knife out of his leg and stood up.

"Don't call me that! Rem... that... that... SPIDER was not our mother!"

"Yes she was, Knives, and you killed her. All she ever did was love us, and yet you hated her... Why?" He looked over at Knives, who, to his surprise, was on his knees sobbing.

"You're right. I am a killer. I am a heartless... thing. I killed Rem! I killed the only person who ever cared about me and never even gave it a second thought. I don't deserve to live. Please, Vash... kill me." Vash calmly lowered the barrel of his gun to point straight between the eyes of his brother. He pulled the trigger and...

"Oops," Vash said. "I guess I forgot to load it!"

He could feel the sweat drip from his forehead as he waited for the end of the awkward silence. Suddenly Knives began to laugh. Softly at first, but it soon grew to be as loud of a cackle as ever. But there was no malice or hatred in his voice. Noticing this change, Vash chuckled along with him. "Come on, brother. I'll take care of you until your leg heals. Oh, yeah. There's a food I want to show you... It's called a doughnut. You'll love it! You go on ahead. I'll catch up in a second." Knives nodded and limped ahead. When he was sure he was out of Knives' range of hearing, he replaced the ammunition he had palmed a moment earlier. Then he dropped the gun into its holster and headed off to show his brother the best food ever.
