Akira Mikami's hand clenched into a fist as his head swiveled away from the clock he had been avidly checking for the past half hour.
"July 29th," he breathed. "Happy birthday, Katsurō!"
As if in reply to Akira's longing, Katsurō's eyes cracked open. "Akira? What time is it?" He didn't seem surprised to see Akira kneeling next to his bed.
"Midnight," Akira answered, too quickly. "Er…happy birthday…Katsurō…"
"Huh?" Katsurō realized what day it was. "Seriously? Today is July 29th?"
Akira nodded absentmindedly; he was busy watching Katsurō's excited flush creep over the teen's perfect cheeks.
"I'm a year older," Katsurō said fervently, marveling at the joy caused simply by waking up at midnight and finding that you are a year older than you were a minute previously.
Akira nodded again.
Katsurō glanced at Akira, and a small smirk formed on his face. Tantalizing. Delicious. Akira couldn't think straight.
"Do I get a birthday kiss?"
Akira blushed bright red. "W-what?!" he spluttered.
"A birthday kiss." Katsurō lifted his face towards Akira's, smiling absently. "Please?"
Akira was too surprised to speak coherently. "I—you—but—what—okay."
Katsurō leaned forward and pressed his lips reverently against Akira's.
They stayed like that for a full minute.
Then Katsurō pulled away. "I'm going back to sleep. You should as well, Akira."
"I will," Akira murmured. He'd gotten what he'd wanted. Now all he could do was dream.
"Thank you," Katsurō muttered, just as sleep had begun to take Akira's thoughts from him.
"For what?" Akira struggled to talk.
"That was the best birthday present in the world."
