A/N: It has been forever since I've last seen Care Bears, I only remember a little bit about them. So if I get something wrong in this story please forgive me. Also, I really didn't know what to title this one.
Why had he agreed to this again? Race couldn't help but wonder as he watched the colorful anthropomorphic bears on the TV screen. He was starting to get sick of those stupid bears. Hearing a quiet yawn, Race looked down at the little girl curled up against his side. Right. He was watching this movie (again) because Jessie really hadn't given him a choice. Well, she had, but how the hell could he say no to her when she was giving him that bright hopeful look? Besides, with how his job was he rarely got to spend time with her. If this was how Jessie wanted to spend that time then so be it.
The movie was almost over by now, which was a good thing considering Jessie was falling asleep. It took only a few minutes for the last scene to play before the credits rolled. Race got up slowly to avoid waking Jessie up to much and turned the TV off. Taking the movie from the machine and putting it back in its case, he put it back on the shelf of kid's movies. A shelf that was almost completely full by now.
Race gently picked up the half asleep four-year-old and carried her down the hall to her room.
"Daddy?" Jessie mumbled when she was set down on her bed.
"Hmm?" Race tucked the blanket around her gently.
"Do you think Care-A-Lot is real?" She looked up at him with sleepy emerald eyes.
"I don't know, Panchita." Race replied. He knew the answer, of course he did. It wasn't real. It was just a made-up place in a cartoon show for kids. But there was no reason for him to tell Jessie all of that now.
Jessie yawned, already seeming to forget about her question she mumbled, "Night Daddy, love you."
"I love you too, Jessie." Race smiled. He leaned down and kissed her forehead, "Goodnight."
Leaving his daughter's room, Race walked down the hall and into the master bedroom.
"Enjoy the movie?" Estella quipped from where she sat in bed reading.
"I'm going to have nightmares about those damn Care Bears." Race grumbled in response.
"You agreed to watch it." Estella pointed out as Race sat on the edge of the bed.
"I know." He sighed as he began taking his boots off. "I just..."
"...Need to take every opportunity to spend time with her that you can." Estella finished as she set her book aside. "I know. Honestly we should all spend more time together."
Race nodded his head. "What about going to the park tomorrow?" He suggested.
Estella thought for a moment then nodded in agreement.
And then the phone rang.
Race got up to answer it, only able to think of one person who would call at this time of night. "Hello?" Estella watched as he suddenly morphed into the I-One agent. "Where?... When? ... Alright. See you then."
"A mission?" Estella asked after he had hung up.
Race nodded.
"When are you leaving?" She asked, getting the feeling tomorrow's plans had just gone out the window.
"Tomorrow morning." Race answered. He sat down on the bed again, sighing in frustration.
"We can just postpone going to the park." Estella said. Though, if she was to be honest, she was getting sick of always having to postpone plans.
"I guess we'll have to." Race lay down beside her. He didn't voice the fact that when he got home (if he got home) he may not be in any shape to go anywhere. "I'm sorry." He mumbled.
"It's alright." Estella sighed as she reached for the beside lamp and turned it off. "As long as you come home." She rolled onto her side, resting her head on his chest.
Wrapping an arm around her, Race replied, "I'll always come home, Estella."
It was a promise that was likely to be broken, but it was one he was determined to keep for as long as possible.
