Chapter 1: I volunteer
(Lillie POV)
I stood in the lakes of District 4 trying to catch some fish.
"Come on!" I groaned
I see a lot of fish ahead.
"Gotcha!" I grab my fishing pole and get ready to cast.
"Now what are you going to do with all those fish?!"
I was startled and messed up my shot.
"BETH!"
My best friend Beth Mendez comes out.
"You made me miss my shot!"
"Now, again I ask what are you going to do with all those fish?"
"Some I'm selling to peacekeepers and the rest Caroline and Luna and I will eat"
"Sell to peacekeepers, really Lillie?"
"Don't you sell to peacekeepers?"
"Not today!" She pulled her slingshot out of her pocket
"It's reaping day and you want me to sell to peacekeepers?" She launched a rock using her slingshot into the water.
"Good point"
"Hey Beth?"
"Yeah?"
"How many times is your name in?"
"...27 times"
"Well that's not bad"
"What about you?"
"Same, Caroline's is in 17 times, then Luna's once"
"Tyler's scared to death, his is in there 17 times as well"
"Well reassure him that it's not just him, there's probably 100 other kids with there names in that many times, and that some have it worst..."
"I'll certainly tell him that"
"Well I better go" I said walking out of the water and putting on my shoes
"See you at the reaping Beth..."
"By the way Lillie"
I turn around.
"Happy Birthday" Beth smiles at me
"Yeah my birthday is on reaping day..."
She pulled me into a hug.
"I got to get Caroline and Luna"
"See you later"
"You too"
I walked to my house after picking up my two sisters, after I unlocked the door we walked inside.
"We closing up shop?" Caroline asked me as I sat the key down
"It's reaping day Caroline, everything's closed..."
"I'm scared"
"Don't worry Luna, your names only in once you'll be okay"
I quickly changed into my pink dress with flowers over it, Caroline had a sky blue shirt with a white skirt and Luna wore a turquoise dress.
"Peacekeepers are coming Lillie!" Caroline panicked
"Calm down...breath deep...lets go"
(The reaping)
"Welcome to the 101st hunger games" The announcer Effie Trinket announced with her own happy voice
We all sarcastically clapped.
"Alright ladies first" She put her hand in the bowl and pulled out a folded piece of paper, Luna and Caroline squeezed my hands.
"Our female tribute is" She opens the folded paper
"Caroline Windemaker" Caroline put a hand to her mouth letting out a gasp and then her other hand went out of my own and just like that my 13 year old sister was walking up on the stage.
Luna wrapped her arms around me crying and I held her.
"Now the boys" Effie put her hand in the bowl once again and pulled out another folded piece of paper.
"Our male tribute is...Tyler Mendez"
I turned around and Beth was squeezing her brother's wrist begging him not to go finally he got out of her grip and started walking up.
I ran out of Luna's grip and grabbed Tyler.
"I volunteer as tribute! I, I wish to take this boys place!"
"Um dear.."
"There's nothing that says a girl can't take a boys place!"
"Very well"
"What are you doing?"
"Giving you a second chance at life now go to your sister okay, go!"
Tyler ran to Beth and embraced her and I walked up to the stage where Caroline looked at me with a face of pure shock.
"What is your name dear?"
"Lillie Windemaker..."
"Oh well I take it you two are sisters..."
"Yes we are" I grabbed Caroline's hand
"Well here we are, our tributes for District 4, Caroline Windemaker and Lillie Windemaker..."
